33 players left in arbitration as 170 reach agreements

A total of 170 major league players agreed to contracts in the hours before Friday night’s arbitration deadline to exchange proposed salaries with teams, and just one reached a multiyear deal: Minnesota right-hander Chris Paddack.

There's little celebrating for the Yankees as they move on to the ALCS. The Astros are waiting. Again

There was little time to bask in revelry, the New York Yankees had a plane to catch, their reward for a 5-1 victory over the Cleveland Guardians. “I would not call it a rest day,” Guardians manager Terry Francona said about ending up without a game Monday. Everyone is available in a must-win game, even would-be ALCS Game 1 starter Shane Bieber if they really, really needed him. The next inning, he hit a 394-foot solo shot to put the Yankees up 4-0. “Everybody knows, we know, the whole world knows what kind of an Astros team they are,” Cortes said.

Stanton, Judge HR, Yankees beat Guards, into ALCS vs Astros

Giancarlo Stanton and Aaron Judge rocked Cleveland with early homers, and Nestor Cortes and the New York Yankees rolled into another AL Championship Series matchup with the Houston Astros. “When they’re all clicking they’re great,” Yankees ace Gerrit Cole said of the Astros, his former team. Naylor made the rocking the baby motion repeatedly while rounding the bases after homering off Cole in Game 4. The Guardians whose $68 million payroll is a fraction of the Yankees’ $274 million, led 2-1 in the best-of-five series. New York hit .182 but outhomered the Guardians 9-3 as Stanton and Judge each went deep twice.

Civale tagged, baby Guardians go home in latest October exit

New York took the Division Series three games to two and advanced to face Houston in an ALCS clash of titans. The streak began with an 11-inning loss in Game 7 of that year's World Series against the Marlins in Florida. And this defeat marked Cleveland's eighth in a row with a chance to clinch a postseason series. The Guardians also won 12 times during the regular season when trailing after seven innings, matching a franchise mark. The choice to start Civale, though, was one of several questionable decisions by the Guardians on a day when they simply seemed out of sorts.

Stanton, Judge bash Yanks to 5-1 win, into ALCS vs Astros

Taillon will start Wednesday night’s AL Championship Series opener at Houston, which goes with Justin Verlander. Houston beat the Yankees in a seven-game championship series in 2017 and over six games in 2019. Civale started Stanton with an outside curveball in the dirt, and pitching coach Carl Willis went to the mound. The Yankees are 27-2 when Stanton and Judge homer in the same game. LAPPINGPlayoff rounds overlapped onto the same day for the first time in Major League Baseball history, with the NL Championship Series starting less than 30 minutes after the final put.

MLB playoffs: Yankees-Guardians Game 5 will (finally) decide the ALDS. Here's how rain changed the teams' plans

There's one spot left in the Championship Series, and one game left to decide who gets it. After attempting to wait out rain in New York, MLB moved the winner-take-all Game 5 in the New York Yankees' and Cleveland Guardians' American League Division Series to Tuesday at 4:07 p.m. The series, already altered by a Game 2 rain delay, once again had its pitching considerations scrambled on Monday night. That doesn't mean Cleveland's Game 2 starter, Shane Bieber, couldn't emerge from the bullpen in a key moment. MLB playoffs: Yankees-Guardians rainout might force 4 games in 4 days. Could that help Cleveland pull the upset?

The upshot is a series that could require four games in four days if it goes the full five games. Game 2 starters Shane Bieber, Nestor Cortes Jr. limited laterBecause the Guardians had to get through the wild-card series first, Cleveland ace Bieber couldn’t start Game 1 opposite Gerrit Cole.
