Jets fire Gregg Williams after call on defense costs 1st win
(AP Photo/Julio Cortez, File)NEW YORK – Adam Gase thought through the final agonizing moments of the New York Jets' stunning loss and tried to not make a rash decision. The coach got a little bit of sleep before he headed to the team's facility Monday morning — with the same conclusion he had Sunday night: defensive coordinator Gregg Williams had to go. I wish I would've called timeout, but I didn't.”The 62-year-old Williams had been the Jets' defensive coordinator the past two seasons under Gase. The no-nonsense Williams has made a career of being an aggressive play caller on defense, but the Jets have struggled this year while ranking 29th in total defense and 30th in scoring defense. But the Jets' defense had mostly done its job Sunday, including a fourth-down stop with 1:37 left.

Chiefs' locker room mum on Bell's arrival - well, almost
The New York Jets have surprisingly released Bell, ending a disappointing tenure after less than two full seasons. Spagnuolo already had plenty of headaches trying to stop Bell when the two-time All-Pro running back was with the Pittsburgh Steelers. That's why Chiefs offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy was quick to say: “I know there's been some discussion about a particular player. But Edwards-Helaire had just 38 yards rushing the following week, 64 yards rushing each of the next two and 40 yards rushing last Sunday against the Raiders — when the Chiefs lost 40-32 to end their franchise-record 13-game winning streak. But Clyde is doing a heck of a job.”He also can't do it alone, and that's another reason the Chiefs signed Bell.

(AP Photo/David Dermer, File)NEW YORK – The New York Jets' decision to move on from Le'Veon Bell was a stunner. The Jets also gave Bell and his agent permission to explore trades on their ends, but there were no takers. “Yeah, I mean, the first game he played a half and got injured, and then he played this last game,” Gase said. “Nobody thought that was the reason why it’s going the way it’s going,” Gase said.

Big Apple rotten with Jets, Giants off to 0-4 starts
The New York Jets and Giants are both 0-4 for the first time since 1976, and victories might be tough to come by this season. The Big Apple is pretty rotten when it comes to its professional football teams, and it's tough to imagine things getting better any time soon. Both the Jets and Giants are 0-4 for the first time since 1976 — the only other time they've gotten off to similar dismal starts. Just four games into the NFL season, the Jets and Giants have firmly established themselves as the league's worst teams. Darnold was able to come back early in the second quarter on the Jets' next series — and was promptly sacked again. The Jets took advantage — eventually.
Sluggish practices are the latest concern for Gase, Jets
An 0-2 start with dismal performances in both games has the New York Jets in an early season hole. “Nobody said anything during the week,” Gase said Wednesday. Many fans and some media pointed the blame at Gase for not overseeing better, sharper practices, although coordinator Gregg Williams is responsible for the defense. “Yeah, I mean everybody has a different feel of how practice goes,” Gase said. “We, as players, have to come out there and execute.”NOTES: The Jets signed S Marqui Christian to the active roster from Chicago's practice squad.

After driving the Bills on three consecutive scoring drives, Allen closed the first half by fumbling at the Jets 12. The Jets finished the game without starting running back Le’Veon Bell, who was ruled out in the second half due to a hamstring injury.
Camp injuries, virus protocols had some NFL teams scrambling
I think theres a lot of teams in the league right now that are dealing with all kinds of injuries. He's right. Teams all over the league were sent scrambling during camp. Certainly not during training camp when players are going hard to make the roster as the start of the regular season rolls closer. It's the soft tissue injuries and those things that you are trying to prevent with the ramp-up period," Bitonio said. That will certainly be something to monitor as the regular season begins and teams deal with injuries and potential replacements.
Gase, Marrone, Quinn among NFL coaches sitting on hot seats
Hes got a lot more control of the offense this year, Gase said of Darnold.
