It’s the sixth panther death attributed to fatal collisions, out of nine total deaths this year, according to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission. On Friday, the remains of a male panther cub were found on private land near the Collier County landfill, officials said. Florida panthers once roamed the entire Southeast, but now their habitat mostly is confined to a small region of Florida along the Gulf of Mexico. Up to 230 Florida panthers remain in the wild.

The Broward Sheriff's Office says Joel Cossio, 31, was arrested in Charlotte County, about 150 miles from the Cleveland Clinic in Weston where the attack occurred. Detectives said the woman was walking into the hospital on Saturday morning when a man tackled her. It was seen driving west on Alligator Alley, which leads to Charlotte County. Officials say Cossio is being held in Charlotte County pending a judge's order allowing his transfer to Broward.

A small plane made an emergency landing Wednesday morning at Mile Marker 40 on Alligator Alley, officials from the city of Weston confirmed via Twitter. According to Federal Aviation Administration spokeswoman Arlene Salac, the single-engine Mooney M20R made the emergency landing at 9:50 a.m. According to Florida Highway Patrol Lt. Yanko Reyes, the pilot, identified only as a 45-year-old man, reported a mechanical issues on that plane that affected the engine. Reyes said the pilot was forced to land the plane in the right emergency shoulder. The driver of the landscaping truck was also not injured, authorities said.
