Nevada elections department subpoenaed in Trump probe
Cegavske’s office opted to provide documents, of which there was only one, with officials who were not on the DOJ's request list. Clark County, Nevada's most populous county which includes Las Vegas, also received a subpoena. The DOJ requested identical documents from other key swing states and counties it subpoenaed. Cegavske’s office had no records detailing communication with any of the Trump campaign officials listed on the subpoena, but did provide one document anyway. All of the states the DOJ subpoenaed are key battlegrounds that Trump and his allies targeted as they tried to overturn the election.wftv.com
Nevada high court rejects plea to stop county's hand-count
The Nevada Supreme Court denied an emergency writ from two voting rights groups on Monday that sought to shut down a controversial hand-count of all paper ballots in rural Nye County, meaning that the county clerk can continue the hand-counting of ballots that have been counted by machine tabulators.
Hand vote count stops, but Nevada county vows to try again
LAS VEGAS — (AP) — A rural Nevada county roiled by voting machine conspiracy theories stopped its unprecedented effort Friday to count ballots cast in advance of Election Day. The ACLU accused Nye County officials of failing to prevent public release of early results before polls close to in-person voting Nov. 8. “No alternative hand-counting process may proceed,” Cegavske said a letter to interim Nye County Clerk Mark Kampf, until the counting method complies with the Supreme Court’s Oct. 21 order. Trump won 69% of the vote in Nye County, but Democratic President Joe Biden won Nevada by about 2.4%. The Republican nominee for secretary of state, Jim Marchant, has repeated unsubstantiated election claims and said he wants to spread hand-counting to every Nevada county.wftv.com
Hand vote count on hold after Nevada high court says illegal
Nye County officials and their lawyers did not immediately respond to requests for comment. In its three-page ruling Thursday evening, the high court stopped short of ordering a halt to the recount. After counting 900 ballots Wednesday, Kampf said his goal was to count about 2,000 ballots per day. While the county planned to count every vote by hand, it was still relying on Dominion voting machines as the primary vote tabulators for this election. Trump won 69% of the vote in Nye County although President Joe Biden won Nevada by about 2.4%.wftv.com
Nevada election chief tells rural county to halt hand count
Lawyers for Nye County did not immediately respond to a phone message from The Associated Press Thursday night seeking comment. Attorneys for Nye County said in a court filing earlier Thursday that the ACLU was engaging in “political stunts and ‘gotcha’ games." Nye County is an old silver mining region best known as the home of the nation’s vast former nuclear weapons test site. Depending on their home location, Nye County voters can have more than 20 ballot choices. Trump won 69% of the vote in Nye County although President Joe Biden won Nevada by about 2.4%.wftv.com
Voter groups object to proposed Nevada hand-counting rules
Election 2022 Nevada Vote Counting Election workers process mail-in ballots during a nearly all-mail primary election in Las Vegas, June 9, 202. For the first time in decades, hand-counting will be used in parts of Nevada on election day. Wlaschin said the rules would help counties that opt to switch to hand-counting systems, preventing clerks from having to draw up rules from scratch. Kampf said he agrees with many of the state’s proposed hand-counting rules, though he thinks teams should count 50 ballots at a time, rather than 20. Nearly every other Nevada county plans to stick with machine counting.wftv.com

Steve Sisolak results that will deliver six electoral votes from the western U.S. battleground state to Biden. Nevada Secretary of State Barbara Cegavske, a Republican who has avoided the public eye in recent weeks, presented the results to the court. That was up from a turnout of 76.8% during the presidential election in 2016, when Democrat Hillary Clinton carried Nevada by a little under 2.5% over Trump.
Trump, allies make frantic steps to overturn Biden victory
WASHINGTON – President Donald Trump and his allies are taking increasingly frantic steps to subvert the results of the 2020 election, including summoning state legislators to the White House as part of a longshot bid to overturn Joe Biden’s victory. But there has been no evidence of impropriety or fraud in Michigan, election officials have said. But election officials across the country have said repeatedly there was no widespread fraud. In Arizona, the Republican Party is pressuring county officials to delay certifying results. In northwestern Arizona, Mohave County officials postponed their certification until next week.
Trump targets vote certification in late bid to block Biden
In Michigan, two Republican election officials in the state's largest county initially refused to certify results despite no evidence of fraud. The moves don’t reflect a coordinated effort across the battleground states that broke for Biden, local election officials said. There is no precedent for the Trump team's widespread effort to delay or undermine certification, according to University of Kentucky law professor Joshua Douglas. Across the nation, recounts and court challenges must wrap up and election results be certified by Dec. 8. Trump personal attorney Rudy Giuliani argued to stop vote certification in Pennsylvania on Tuesday, the first time he’d been in a courtroom in decades.

(AP Photo/John Locher,File)LAS VEGAS – The Trump campaign and Nevada Republicans asked a state judge on Friday to stop the count of Las Vegas-area mail-in ballots, alleging that “meaningful observation” of signature-checking is impossible in the state’s biggest and most Democratic-leaning county. Trump has repeatedly taken to Twitter to sow doubt about widespread use of mailed ballots, suggesting that it encourages fraud. “Throughout this election, Trump and Republicans have resorted to baseless attacks to undermine confidence in Nevada’s election integrity," the Democratic Party statement said.
Trump campaign asks US judge to kill Nevada vote-by-mail law
The Trump campaign argues that sending ballots to nearly 1.7 million active voters in Nevada will impede Republicans ability to elect candidates because the law will confuse their voters and create incentive to stay away from the polls." The 16-page U.S. District Court filing was an answer to Nevada Secretary of State Barbara Cegavskes motion last month to throw out the lawsuit filed by the Trump campaign, Republican National Committee and state Republicans. Nevada argues that the Trump campaign and Republicans dont have legal standing to take the case to court and have failed to explain how theyd be harmed. They characterize the state law as a modest change to address the dangers of voting in-person during the COVID-19 pandemic. With Universal Mail-In Voting (not Absentee Voting, which is good), 2020 will be the most INACCURATE & FRAUDULENT Election in history," he tweeted July 30.
Nevada lawmakers OK mailing voters ballots, Trump slams move
CARSON CITY, Nev. Nevada state lawmakers passed a bill Sunday that would add the state to a growing list of U.S. states that will mail active voters ballots ahead of the November election amid the coronavirus pandemic. Trump has claimed the mail ballots would lead to fraud and compromise the integrity of the election. Limited polling places in Reno and Las Vegas resulted in lines of up to eight hours. The U.S. Center for Disease Control has issued election guidance to provide a wide variety of voting options and limit crowds at polling places. In states such as Colorado and Oregon, which have mailed all voters ballots for years, the procedure is cheaper than holding an in-person election.
Advocates, experts warn against polling place reductions
There was only one polling place open on election day this week in Louisville, Kentucky, and voting went relatively smoothly compared to other recent primaries amid the global pandemic. Offering just one site on election day presumes we have reached everyone, and we dont have to work as hard on election day, and that thinking is dangerous, said Kristen Clarke, executive director for the Lawyers Committee for Civil Rights Under Law. The shortages prompted local officials to consolidate polling places across the country for the primaries. In Milwaukee, officials closed all but five of the citys 180 polling places, resulting in people standing in line for two hours. Fayette County Clerk Don Blevins urged state officials to issue guidelines for the fall election as soon as possible.
