Giffords documentary comes as gun debates stay center stage

Also on Thursday, the U.S. Senate easily passed a bipartisan gun violence bill. Having spent time with Giffords and others impacted by gun violence, the film's directors say their voices are central to the discourse. “To say that somehow Gabby shouldn't be speaking about gun violence because she's experienced violence? A crucial element of the documentary came from videos Kelly had of Giffords in the Tucson hospital and at a rehab facility in Houston. If there's one message she wants viewers to take from the documentary, it's “fight, fight, fight every day," Giffords said.

‘Summer of Soul,’ ‘Drive My Car’ make Oscars shortlist

Documentaries about Julia Child, “Black Woodstock,” the pandemic and The Velvet Underground and acclaimed international films like Japan’s “Drive My Car,” Iran’s “A Hero” and Norway’s “The Worst Person in the World” just got a little closer to scoring Oscar nominations.

‘RBG’ filmmakers find a rich vein: Feminist love stories

The label “date movie” hasn’t traditionally been applied much to documentaries but filmmakers Betsy West and Julie Cohen have twice now made non-fiction films of trailblazing female icons that also happen to be portraits of loving, supportive marriages.

'RBG' filmmakers find a rich vein: Feminist love stories

“Feminist love stories are our genre,” Cohen says in an interview alongside West. Child wrote a letter in 1982 that was sent to Planned Parenthood donors. “It’s frankly an opportunity for us to tell these stories.”West and Cohen had worked in documentary film in various capacities before “RBG" dramatically raised their profiles. But our perspective as documentary filmmakers is that it’s kind of like a gold mine.”It's an ongoing project. And, yes, Cohen promises, this film, too, features what she calls a great feminist love story.

A Toronto Film Festival that straddles normal and virtual

The Toronto International Film Festival is uniquely reliant on crowds, which has made its 2021 edition particularly challenging during the pandemic.

A fall movie season (like everything else) in flux

The fall movie season -- usually a reliable rhythm and cozy autumn comfort — is this year, like much of the past 18 months, a little disorienting.

Organizers on Tuesday unveiled a robust and diverse slate for the festival, which will be largely virtual due to the pandemic. Yutani said that the Sesame Street documentary, “Street Gang: How We Got To Sesame Street” is likely to be a crowd favorite. “We all are so excited about the possibility of encountering people who’ve never been to the festival," Jackson said.

Ginsburg’s impact on women spanned age groups, backgrounds

Younger women and girls say they were inspired by the late justice's achievements, her intellect and her fierce determination as she pursued her career. “She was my teacher in so many ways,” said Gloria Steinem, the nation’s most visible feminist leader, in an interview. Younger women and girls also say they were inspired by the justice's achievements, her intellect and her fierce determination as she pursued her career. Julie Cohen and Betsy West, who co-directed “RBG,” saw firsthand how women of all ages quickly identified with Ginsburg. But also, Cohen added: “She became a huge symbolic figure for young women and even girls in a way that we hadn’t anticipated.

Family, work and opera filled Ginsburg's final summer

The Supreme Court says Supreme court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg has died of metastatic pancreatic cancer at age 87. Hartnett, who wore a mask and tested negative for the coronavirus before visiting, said the justice was continuing to do court work. “She immediately lit up and said ‘Yes, I’ve had so much time with my family, and they have been wonderful,’” Hartnett said. Also this summer Ginsburg would have been engaged in the work of the court. A day before she died, Ginsburg was honored by the National Constitution Center with its Liberty Medal.
