BRIAN JOHNSON

Cain-Gribble and LeDuc top Calalang and Johnson in pairs

US Championships Figure Skating Ashley Cain-Gribble and Timothy LeDuc compete in the pairs free skate program during the U.S. Figure Skating Championships — and almost certainly one of the two spots at next month's Olympics. Cain-Gribble and LeDuc led Calalang and Johnson by two points after their short program, and the 2019 champions nailed every element from an opening triple twist to an incredible finishing death spiral to finish with 225.23 points. That put them well ahead of Calalang and Johnson, who couldn't overcome three mistakes in the first half of their program to catch up. That left Cain-Gribble and LeDuc in a showdown with Calalang and Johnson for the other spot on the team.

Cain-Gribble and LeDuc take pairs lead at US championships

NASHVILLE, Tenn. — (AP) — Ashley Cain-Gribble and Timothy LeDuc upstaged a brilliant performance by Jessica Calalang and Brian Johnson on Thursday to take the lead after the pairs short program at the U.S. More importantly, it put the 2019 national champions ahead of Calalang and Johnson heading into the free skate at what amounts to the U.S. trials for the Beijing Olympics next month. The competition continued later Thursday with the women's short program. If they are successful, that would leave just one spot up for grabs; the pairs free skate takes place Saturday night. They were effortless in the solo jumps that have caused them problems in the past, and now they can look ahead to the free skate, which has been their strength all season.

Titans' NFL-best winning streak now 7, edge Saints 23-21

NASHVILLE, Tenn. — (AP) — Ryan Tannehill ran and threw for touchdowns as the Tennessee Titans held off the New Orleans Saints 23-21 Sunday for their NFL-best sixth straight victory. The Saints (5-4) dropped their second straight since losing quarterback Jameis Winston to a season-ending ACL injury. But Adam Trautman was flagged for a false start, pushing the Saints back to the Titans 7 on the 2-pointer. Siemian's pass to Mark Ingram at the right edge of the end zone was incomplete, with Titans cornerback Jackrabbit Jenkins defending. INJURIESSaints: WR Ty Montgomery II went to the locker room late in New Orleans' second series of the game with an inured finger.

(AP Photo/Ted S. Warren) (Ted S. Two of the Seahawks' biggest mistakes came on New Orleans’ deciding drive when Seattle was flagged for roughing the passer and jumping offside on a long field-goal attempt. Both penalties gave New Orleans first downs, and Johnson’s field goal coming out of the 2-minute warning put the Saints ahead. He also made enough plays — thanks to Seattle penalties — to get the Saints in range for the winning field goal.

Kyle Trask leads Florida into venue that inspired his name

Florida quarterback Kyle Trask (11) throws a pass against South Carolina during the first half of an NCAA college football game, Saturday, Oct. 3, 2020, in Gainesville, Fla. (AP Photo/John Raoux,Pool)GAINESVILLE, Fla. – When Florida quarterback Kyle Trask walks into Kyle Field this weekend, it surely will feel a little surreal. So Trask had plenty of loved ones around him rooting against the state’s flagship university in Austin. On Saturday, some of those relatives might be a little torn between their beloved and 21st-ranked Aggies (1-1) and Trask and the No. Trask was a freshman at Manvel High at the time, in the early stages of a seven-year stretch as a backup quarterback. A year after replacing Franks at Kentucky and finishing with the most TD passes (25) for a Florida quarterback since Tebow’s senior season in 2010, Trask leads the Southeastern Conference with 10 TD tosses in two games.

Analyst warns young investors to watch out for Tesla bubble: 'Not to sound like an OK, boomer'

"We continue to believe TSLA is fundamentally overvalued," noted the analyst, who's price forecast calls for a 65% plunge in the stock. More than 22,000 investors bought Tesla's stock for the first time on millennial-favored Silicon Valley stock trading app Robinhood in the past three days. Plus, when you type in "should I" on Google's search engine, the first auto-fill recommendation says "buy Tesla stock," further demonstrating interest. Some investors see Tesla as the pure play for electric-car markers, fueling the stock's massive rally. Barclays raised its price target on Tesla to $300 per share from $200 per share, which is still well below Tesla's $887.06 per share closing price Tuesday.

Dow jumps 480 points, S&P 500 closes at record as market shakes off coronavirus fears

Stocks rose for a third straight day on Wednesday, pushing the S&P 500 back to levels hit prior to the coronavirus scare. That gain drove the S&P 500 to a record closing high. At one point, the S&P 500 was down as much as 3.1% because of worries around the fast-spreading virus. Prior to that, the S&P 500 had gone 74 sessions without a move of that magnitude. Confirmed coronavirus cases in China are near 25,000, claiming the lives of 490 people.

Florida's Jones developing as quarterback, team leader

GAINESVILLE Even though his appearances were brief in four games last season, Florida quarterback Emory Jones managed to show uncommon poise, leadership and maturity for a true freshman. Hes very, very likable and does a great job, Johnson said. Thats one of the prerequisites that we require for our guys to go ahead and play that position. Like a year ago, Jones is expected to get a package of plays to run in games, maybe even every game. Thats really with all the guys, thats what we harp on, consistency of performance.

A big Tesla skeptic on Wall Street raises his estimate for second-quarter earnings

Tesla got a boost Friday from one of its biggest Wall Street skeptics, who now sees Elon Musk's electric car company headed to a nearly profitable second-quarter earnings report. Tesla shares rose 0.6% in Friday's premarket from its previous close of $253.54. Its stock surged in early July after Tesla reported a record second-quarter deliveries number. At the time, Johnson called the number "impressive" but said Tesla would have to show that it's improving profitability, urging investors to focus on the second-quarter earnings report. "While we were not overly surprised by the swing trade going into the delivery report, and the reaction thereafter, we are somewhat surprised by the continued strength" of Tesla shares, Johnson said.
