Champion Max Verstappen ends F1 season with 15th win

Max Verstappen, as usual this season, was far ahead of the rest on his way to a record-extending 15th win of the season. “Incredible to win again here, 15th win of the season is unbelievable,” Verstappen said. There was potential for a fight for second place on track and in the championship standings, but little real drama. Perez and Ferrari's Charles Leclerc came into the race equal on points, just like Verstappen and Lewis Hamilton did last year. Errors on track from Leclerc and in Ferrari's race strategy held them back too.

Perez and Leclerc entered the race tied for second in the points standings after Verstappen didn't pull over for his teammate on the final lap in Brazil. Ferrari’s Carlos Sainz finished fourth to ensure that Ferrari finished second in the constructor’s standings to Red Bull while Mercedes’ George Russell was fifth. Perez won two races in 2022 as Red Bull won 17 of the season’s 22 races. Leclerc won three races while Sainz won the British Grand Prix.

F1: Verstappen's title on hold after Perez wins in Singapore

SINGAPORE — (AP) — Max Verstappen's Formula One title celebrations were put on hold after the Red Bull driver placed seventh at a chaotic Singapore Grand Prix, won by his teammate Sergio Perez on Sunday. Perez was being investigated for a potential safety car infringement. Verstappen made a mistake after the second safety car restart, following AlphaTauri driver Yuki Tsunoda's crash on Lap 36. Tricky conditions saw the virtual safety car deployed three times and DRS was allowed with about 30 minutes remaining. The first safety car was on Lap 8 when Zhou Guanyu's Alfa Romeo was cut off by Nicholas Latifi’s Williams.

Verstappen now has a 116-point lead over Charles Leclerc, who finished second after another questionable strategy decision from Ferrari on its home track. With just six races remaining, the Dutch driver could mathematically clinch the title in Singapore next month. It was the first time Verstappen has set foot on the iconic Monza podium, with his highest previous finish being fifth in 2018. Ferrari decided to bring Leclerc in to change to medium tires, allowing Verstappen to take the lead.
