Higgs making most of chances and shares lead at Sea Island
ST. SIMONS ISLAND, Ga. — (AP) — Harry Higgs lost his full PGA Tour card toward the end of last season and took a step Friday at Sea Island toward getting it back. Even without anyone from the top 20 in the world at Sea Island, plenty is at stake in the final official PGA Tour event before a six-week break to end the year. Putnam, whose only PGA Tour title was in 2018, had a 65 on the Plantation course. After he tied for 14th in his Masters debut, Higgs missed the cut in 10 of his last 14 events to finish out of the top 125 in the FedEx Cup. Job security can be stressful on the PGA Tour, especially going into a season in which only 70 will qualify for the lucrative postseason.

ST. SIMONS ISLAND, Ga. — (AP) — Cole Hammer would have been happy with pars in the cold and wind off Sea Island. “It was really cool looking at the top (of the leaderboard) and seeing my last name there,” Hammer said. “He's making me look average,” Hossler said when he finished his round and Hammer already was 8 under with three holes to play. He only has conditional status on the Korn Ferry Tour, so a good week could go a long way. Harris English opened with a 4-under 68 at Plantation, a good start to an important week.

Ricky Castillo won again, too, and the Americans took five of the 10 afternoon singles matches and tied another Sunday at Seminole Golf Club for a 14-12 victory. The Americans won for the third straight time to take a 38-9-1 lead in the biennial event first played in 1922. British Amateur champion Long, Matty Lamb, Angus Flanagan and Jack Dyer won matches for GB&I. Long beat John Pak 1 up, Lamb topped Davis Thompson 2 up, Flanagan beat William Mouw 1 up, and Dyer edged U.S. GB&I last won on American soil in 2001 at Ocean Forest in St. Simons Island, Georgia.
