Speed of coronavirus deaths shock doctors as New York toll hits new high

NEW YORK (Reuters) - New York state, epicenter of Americas coronavirus crisis, set another single-day record of COVID-19 deaths on Wednesday, as veteran doctors and nurses voiced astonishment at the speed with which patients were deteriorating and dying. New York state accounts for over a third of the U.S. total. A woman is loaded into an ambulance by paramedics in the Harlem neighbourhood of Manhattan during the outbreak of the coronavirus disease (COVID19) in New York City, New York, U.S., April 8, 2020. New York City officials said a recent surge in people dying at home suggests the most populous U.S. city may be undercounting the loss of life. So far New York Citys announced death toll has reflected only laboratory-confirmed COVID-19 diagnoses, mostly at hospitals.

One ventilator, two patients: New York hospitals shift to crisis mode

It has killed at least 281 people over a few weeks in New York City, which is struggling with one of the largest caseloads in the world at nearly 22,000 confirmed cases. A tool of last resort that involves threading a tube down a patients windpipe, a mechanical ventilator can sustain a person who can no longer breathe unaided. At Columbia, Smith noted that they could not split a ventilator across just any two COVID-19 patients, but were only pairing patients with sufficiently similar respiratory needs. If one patients lungs were deteriorating faster, he said, it could cause imbalances in the closed system. One patient could starve for oxygen while the other patients lungs would get increased pressure.
