EU leaders tackle inflation, energy shocks from Russia's war

EU leaders were set to discuss economic topics at their summit in Brussels Friday amid inflation, high energy prices and a cost of living crisis. The EU's 27 leaders gathered in Brussels to grapple with surging inflation, energy shocks, dwindling business and consumer confidence, and growing budget pressures. ECB President Christine Lagarde, who plans to raise rates next month and again in September, joined the EU summit to discuss the darkening economic outlook. Before the war, the bloc got about 40% of its gas from Russia. “It’s very likely that Russia will use gas and energy as a blackmail toward European Union countries,” Finnish Prime Minister Sanna Marin said.

FIFA lets foreign players leave Russia until June

(AP Photo/Martin Meissner, File) (Martin Meissner)LONDON — (AP) — FIFA intervened to allow foreign players and coaches based in Russia to leave their clubs on Monday, although only for the rest of the season. FIFPRO and the organization representing the world’s soccer leagues — the World Leagues Forum — sought permission for Russia-based players to terminate their contracts. After Russia launched its invasion of Ukraine, FIFA suspended the country from international soccer games last week but has yet to suspend its soccer federation or officials. There are hundreds of foreign players in Russia who would typically not be able to leave their clubs or sign for new ones outside the two transfer trading periods in the year. Croatia census shows nearly 10% population drop in 10 years

ZAGREB, Croatia — (AP) — A population census conducted last year in Croatia has shown that almost 10% less people live in the European Union country compared to a decade ago, according to preliminary results released on Friday. The census has listed 3.8 million citizens compared to 4.2 million in the previous population count in 2011, said Lidija Brkovic from the national statistics office. The decrease reflects the depopulation problem in Croatia — and elsewhere in the Balkan region — that is a combination of low birth rate and emigration toward more prosperous countries in the West. Croatia's government has singled out the problem as a major challenge for the authorities and the country's future. State broadcaster HRT on Friday said that “unfortunately bad prognosis has materialized.” The report added that the drop amounts to losing the total population of the Adriatic Sea towns of Split and Rijeka.

Omicron variant fuels record number of infections in Croatia

ZAGREB, Croatia — (AP) — The omicron variant of the coronavirus has fueled the highest number of daily new infections in Croatia since the start of the pandemic, officials said Wednesday, as other Balkan countries also reported a sharp rise in cases. “The numbers show that omicron is spreading, we know it is a highly contagious variant that is present here,” he said. A steep surge in new infections also has been reported in other Balkan nations following the Christmas and New Year's holidays and as the omicron variant apparently takes over. Last week, Montenegro tightened virus rules after cases started to rise, including limited working hours of bars and a ban on any gatherings. Experts have warned that new cases could reach “dramatic” figures in the coming days because of the omicron variant and disrespect for COVID-19 rules.
