Sydney McLaughlin does it again, breaks own world record
EUGENE, Ore. — (AP) — Olympic champion Sydney McLaughlin bested her own world record in the 400-meter hurdles at the U.S. outdoor track and field championships Saturday. Allyson Felix, the most decorated woman in track history, finished sixth in the 400, in what was her final national championship race. World record holder Keni Harrison won the women's 100 hurdles in 12:34. Kentucky’s Abby Steiner, who set a collegiate record in the 200 meters at the NCAA track and field championships, had the best time in the heats at 22.14. American record holder Kara Winger won the javelin with a throw of 210 feet, 10 inches, her ninth career national title in the event.

Over nine days at the near-empty Olympic Stadium, the women of track and field delivered a memorable show, both inside the lines and out. Some highlights included:—Hassan and her unrelenting journey toward three medals — two gold and one bronze — in three of the longest races held on the track. She ran the 200 in 21.53 and set the Olympic record in the 100: 10.61 seconds. Earlier in the meet, someone asked Muhammad, the hurdler, what she thought about all this women's dominance at the track - of America's seven gold medals in track and field, they won five. After watching them conquer records, overcome obstacles and make their messages heard over nine days and nights at the Olympic track, it was hard to say she was wrong.

Muhammad's time of of 51.58 also beat McLaughlin's old record of 51.9, set at Olympic trials last month. Amazing as it was, this world record didn't really surprise anyone. McLaughlin and Muhammad, a New York City native who went to Southern Cal, have been trading the record, and the wins, for two years. The day before, Karsten Warholm crushed his old world record, finishing the men’s race in 45.94, and runner-up Rai Benjamin’s 46.17 also beat the old mark.
