Portland scraps Texas boycott, allocates abortion funds

PORTLAND, Ore. — (AP) — The City Council in Portland, Oregon, has scrapped a plan to boycott Texas businesses because of a new law that prohibits most abortions there, deciding Wednesday to instead set aside $200,000 to fund reproductive care. The boycott would have banned the purchase of goods and services by Portland from Texas and bar city employee travel until the legislation is reversed or overturned. The new plan to fund reproductive services passed 4-1 on Wednesday. Commissioner Mingus Mapps cast the only ‘no’ vote, saying he was “genuinely mystified” by what the City Council was trying to accomplish by allocating the $200,000 to fund reproductive care. Probably not," Portland City Commissioner Jo Ann Hardesty said.

Republican wants to require national anthem in Wisconsin

Mavericks owner Mark Cuban agreed to play the national anthem after the NBA reiterated its policy to require the song. “This tradition traces its roots back more than a century – even pre-dating the song’s adoption as the national anthem. Dan Patrick has said that requiring the national anthem at all Texas venues that receive public funding will be among his top legislative priorities this session. Although playing the national anthem before games is a staple of American sports at the professional and collegiate levels, it is far less common in other countries.

How Many Deaths Can We Live With?

What Dan Patrick said was disturbing, especially since he spoke those words a month ago, when any reopening would have led to way more deaths than there has been. But the question it raises is the heart of the matter: its not whether we are willing to accept a certain amount of deaths as the country is reopened, its how many deaths are we prepared to accept. Same thing with the 36,000 annual gun deaths, which would be eliminated without guns anywhere, or, for that matter, the 80,000 deaths from diabetes or 140,000 lung cancer deaths, which could be significantly reduced with a ban on sugar and tobacco. (The four deaths on State Road 100 last weekend were caused by a driver crossing the center line. The months and possibly years ahead call for plans to live with the virus while accepting a measure of risk, as in any war.
