Players Championship gets 4 hours of play and Monday finish

Puddles formed on the putting surfaces when play was stopped, and the rain kept coming. It will be the eighth Monday finish since The Players Championship began in 1974, and the first since 2005. The Players was held in May for 12 years until returning to its earlier date in 2019. The opening round was delayed an hour at the start, and then was suspended for 4 hours, 15 minutes. Johnson is among the fastest players in golf (until he gets to the green), but not on this occasion.

More delays at Players Championship as Monday finish looms

A Monday finish was looking inevitable, which would be the eighth since The Players Championship began in 1974, all of them in March. Only 96 players from the 144-man field had finished the first round when play was stopped. “We may be in a situation where, if we don’t get back out there today, we’re assured of a Monday finish,” said Gary Young, the chief referee of The Players. Brice Garnett holed out for eagle from the fourth fairway and was at 6 under with five holes to play. Johnson is among the fastest players in golf (until he gets to the green), but not on this occasion.

Players Championship gets 4 hours of play and Monday finish

The Players Championship delivered only four hours of golf Friday before rain saturated the TPC Sawgrass, assuring the PGA Tour's premier event will not end until Monday. “The golf course has just reached a point of saturation, and unfortunately the weather conditions are not providing us any relief,” said Gary Young, the chief referee of The Players. It will be the eighth Monday finish since The Players Championship began in 1974, and the first since 2005.

Rory McIlroy part of 3-way tie for lead in the Bahamas

NASSAU, Bahamas — (AP) — Rory McIlroy has gone from tears at the Ryder Cup to some of his best golf of the year, and right now his only complaint is the calendar. “I wish it was the end of March,” McIlroy said Thursday after a 6-under 66 to share the lead with Daniel Berger and Abraham Ancer in the Hero World Challenge. Late eagle from the fairway stakes Spieth to lead at Pebble

He shot 1-under 71 as he goes for a second victory at Pebble Beach in the last five years. A pedestrian round that included bogeys on two of the par 5s left Spieth two shots out of the lead with three holes to play. Spieth didn’t have to contend with what he predicted to be a “mean” day at Pebble Beach. The raging wind was more of a stiff breeze along the ocean holes that Pebble gets all the time. He made bogey on the easiest hole at Pebble Beach from the middle of the fairway on the par-5 second hole, coming up well short of the green, pitching short of the putting surface and missing a par putt from 5 feet.

US Open sees red in Round 1. Will Winged Foot strike back?

Not coincidentally, the big question heading into Round 1 was whether the century-old course would prove too tough even for the world’s best golfers. In five previous Opens played at Winged Foot, only two players have ever finished the tournament under par. We’ll find out whether, and how much, the USGA feels stung by the assault on par beginning with Round 2. And there’s plenty of spots left on those fast greens where a clown’s mouth would actually be a welcome distraction. “They certainly were looking to have the lowest scores (in the first round), given the conditions that we have as well.

From the fairway, Johnson builds ... lead at East

Dustin Johnson hits from the fairway on the 8th hole during the third round of the Tour Championship golf tournament at East Lake Golf Club in Atlanta, Sunday, Sept. 6, 2020. It led to a five-shot lead over Justin Thomas and Xander Schauffele going into the Labor Day finish at East Lake. Mickelson added to field in a US Open without qualifying

Mickelson is now exempt to return to Winged Foot for the U.S. Open in September. The COVID-19 pandemic that forced the U.S. Open to move from June also cost the championship its identity of being open to all. Open qualifying wasnt possible for two stages at nearly 120 courses across the country and into Canada, England and Japan. With his five majors and Hall of Fame career not to mention his legacy of silver medals in the U.S. Open Mickelson likely would have received at least one exemption. The rest of the field is similar to what the British Open has done with its International Finals Qualifying for the PGA Tour.

Simpson celebrates a Father's Day win at Harbour Town

The U.S. Open has been scheduled to end on Father's Day every year since 1976, but it was moved to September this year because of the COVID-19 pandemic. The RBC Heritage filled the spot on the schedule and Simpson, now a father of five, became a winner for the second time this year with a record score at Harbour Town. It was a crazy day, Simpson said. It was a tough runner-up finish for Ancer, trying to become the fifth straight winner of the RBC Heritage to capture his first PGA Tour victory at Harbour Town. Until the first tournament back at Colonial in Fort Worth, Texas, the area around Harbour Town was crowded with the start of summer vacation.

The six rounds at 63 marked the third time since October that at least six players shot 63 in a round. There were seven such rounds at the RSM Classic in November, about 80 miles down the Atlantic coast at Sea Island.

Berger a winner at Colonial, and PGA Tour feels like it, too

The tour administered 487 tests for the new coronavirus at Colonial, and the results on all of them came back negative. Berger made a 10-foot birdie putt on the 18th hole and heard the deafening silence of a big moment with no spectators allowed at Colonial. He got into a playoff when Collin Morikawa missed a 6-foot birdie putt for the win and Xander Schauffele missed his try from 25 feet. Justin Rose had an 18-foot birdie putt on the 18th that looked good all the way until it wasn't. He finished one behind along with Bryson DeChambeau and Jason Kokrak, who also missed birdie chances on the last hole.

Ancient tin found in Israel has Cornish links

Carsten Koall/Getty Images(CNN) - Tin ingots recovered from a shipwreck in Israel have been discovered to have an unlikely origin -- Cornwall, in southwest England. Researchers from Heidelberg University and the Curt Engelhorn Centre for Archaeometry, Mannheim studied 27 tin ingots -- metal cast into bars, plates, or sheets -- from sites in Israel, Turkey and Greece. Perhaps most surprisingly, the team found that tin artifacts from Israel most likely came from Cornwall and Devon in southwest England. The findings, researchers say, prove that "complex and far-reaching" trade routes existed between Europe and the Eastern Mediterranean in the Bronze Age. Berger told CNN that tin was a valuable material for ancient people because it was a key component of bronze -- an alloy of copper and tin.
