With war nearby, US shows support for Poland on army holiday

WARSAW, Poland — (AP) — Polish officials were marking their nation's Armed Forces Day holiday on Monday alongside the U.S. army commander in Europe and regular American troops, a symbolic underlining of NATO support for members on the eastern front as Russia wages war nearby in Ukraine. Nearby American, as well as British troops, stood alongside displays of military equipment. The national holiday commemorates Poland’s victory in 1920 over Soviet Russia in a key battle credited with stopping the Bolshevik army’s westward advance. “Years pass, but one thing is constant — when Russia tries to rebuild its empire, it is always an evil empire. The newly named Camp Kosciuszko in Poznan, western Poland, is a shared Polish-U.S. base that becomes the permanent headquarters in Poland for the US Army’s V Corps, and the easternmost U.S. Army base in Europe.

Naval Academy seeking student vaccines for summer training

Naval Academy in Annapolis, Md. Naval Academy is developing plans to begin vaccinating midshipmen in March 2021, so students can deploy out to ships and with Navy teams as part of their training this summer. Naval Academy is developing plans to begin vaccinating midshipmen this month so students can deploy to ships and with Navy teams as part of their training this summer, Vice Adm. Sean Buck told Congress Tuesday. If the vaccines are available, the midshipmen would be the first military academy students to receive the COVID-19 shots. The plans come as the Naval Academy wrestles with a new uptick in positive coronavirus cases, and has locked down the campus in Annapolis, Maryland, for 10 days.

Military academies probe possible 'white power' sign at game

The U.S. Military Academy and Naval Academy have appointed officers to conduct separate internal investigations into possible “white power” hand gestures flashed by a few students during a broadcast at the Army-Navy football game, academy public affairs officers said Sunday. “It would be inappropriate to speculate any further while we are conducting this investigation.”Lt. Col. Chris Ophardt, a spokesman for the U.S. Military Academy at West Point in New York, said officials there were also looking into the matter. “The United States Military Academy is fully committed to developing leaders of character who embody the army values,” said Lt. Gen. Darryl Williams, West Point’s superintendent. U.S. Coast Guard leaders reprimanded an officer who used a similar hand sign during a television broadcast last year. In September, West Point removed a motto from a spirit flag used by the school's football team because of its connection to white supremacist groups.

An M4 rifle was also missing, but the cadet was not believed to have any magazines or ammunition.
