NBA changes COVID protocols, shortens path to return to play

Franklin)NBA players who test positive for COVID-19 now have a quicker path to return to play, after the league completed a significant update to its health and safety protocols on Monday. Teams were told of the new protocols Monday in a memo sent by the league, a copy of which was obtained by The Associated Press. Phoenix plays host to Memphis on Monday, while Portland — with seven players in the protocols as well — plays host to Dallas. Among the new notable additions to the list: Olympic gold medalist Jayson Tatum, placed into protocols by the Boston Celtics. Tatum was one of 15 players — eight Celtics, seven Timberwolves — ruled out of the Boston-Minnesota game for virus-related reasons alone.

LeBron James' group touts sports venues as mega-voting sites
ATLANTA If basketball icon LeBron James gets his way, NBA arenas and other sports venues around the country will be mega polling sites for the November general election. James and his voting rights group, formed this spring with other black athletes and entertainers, are joining with other professional basketball leaders and Michigans top elections official to push for mega voting sites to accommodate in-person balloting amid the COVID-19 pandemic. In Georgia, Fulton County elections officials this week approved the Atlanta Hawks proposal to use State Farm Arena as a polling site. Plans call for the arena to serve any Fulton County voters during early voting and on Election Day, Nov. 3. Voting rights advocates argued in federal court that the plan, part of culling voting sites statewide amid coronavirus concerns, would harm minority voters.

The New York Knicks parted ways with team President Steve Mills on Tuesday, the team said in a press release. "Steve and I have come to the decision that it would be best for him to leave his role as president of the New York Knicks," team owner James Dolan said in the release. General Manager Scott Perry will take over basketball operations until the team finds a new team president, according to the release. Talk about Mills leaving the team had been brewing since head coach David Fizdale was fired on Dec. 6, according to Bleacher Report.

The team also relieved assistant coach Keith Smart, the team said hours after ESPN first reported the news. Assistant coach Mike Miller, 55, will serve as interim coach, the Knicks said in a statement. His overall coaching record, which includes 101 games with the Memphis Grizzlies, is 71-134.
