TORONTO — (AP) — Don Mattingly is joining the Toronto Blue Jays as bench coach to manager John Schneider, the team announced Wednesday. The former New York Yankees slugger, a six-time All-Star, joins the Blue Jays after seven seasons as manager of the Florida Marlins, where he won NL Manager of the Year honors in 2020. He also worked as hitting coach and bench coach for the Yankees, and as hitting coach of the Dodgers before his managerial stint in Los Angeles. In Toronto, Mattingly replaces Casey Candaele, who was promoted from Triple-A Buffalo to serve as Schneider’s bench coach after the Jays fired manager Charlie Montoyo in July, replacing him with Schneider. The Blue Jays said Candaele will resume his job as manager of the Triple-A Bisons in 2023.

Mattingly, the club's all-time leader by a wide margin in managerial wins, is finishing his seventh season with the Marlins. Now comes the Mattingly move, which means someone else will be in charge when the team gathers for spring training. “We are fortunate to have had Don Mattingly leading our team on the field over the last seven years," Sherman said.

Don Mattingly and the Marlins have mutually agreed upon this being the final season with him as Marlins Manager, sources tell me and @J_McPherson1126. When Yankees manager Joe Torre moved to the Los Angeles Dodgers at the end of the 2007 season, Mattingly did as well (after he was passed over for the Yankees managerial job). When Joe Torre retired as Dodgers manager in 2010, Mattingly was announced as his successor.

New Marlins GM Ng eager to finally see her team in action

And Ng, hired in November as the first female general manager in Major League Baseball, will be watching. She made offseason moves to improve the team as she was still learning about it. Young pitching is the Marlins' strength, both at the major league level and in the minors.

No days off puts stress on pitchers in Division Series, LCS

Teams could play the Division Series over five straight days, take a single day off and then contest the League Championship Series on seven consecutive days. The last to pitch for seven straight days was San Francisco’s Steve Kline from July 31 to Aug. 6, 2007. The League Championship Series has had a 2-3-2 format since 1985, with days off between Games 2 and 3, then another between Games 5 and 6. To start twice in the Division Series, Game 1 pitchers would have to come back on three days' rest.
