PORT ORANGE, Fla. Port Orange is the latest Central Florida city to call off its annual Fourth of July event in light of the ongoing coronavirus pandemic. The decision was made to postpone the event based on the reopening guidelines released by state and federal authorities, which wont allow for mass gatherings in the near future, a news release from city officials said. Florida is currently in full phase one of its three-phased plan to reopen the states economy. Details about when the event will take place were not immediately available but officials said they expect to hold it later this year. [PREVIOUS: Orange County Convention Center could host big event as early as next month]Since 1888, the AAU has prided itself on providing quality event participation opportunities to millions of athletes in a safe environment, said AAU President & CEO Dr. Roger J. Goudy. Therefore, out of an abundance of caution, the decision was made to move the AAU Volleyball event to start July 14. Prior to Fridays announcement, convention center officials were moving forward with a plan to safely put on the large event. The rescheduled AAU Junior National Volleyball Championships event will begin July 14, according to the news release.
