Adela Gonzmart’s legacy lives on at Florida’s oldest restaurant 6 generations later
Adela Hernandez Gonzmart founded The Columbia in 1905 with her husband, which is now Florida's oldest restaurant. The original restaurant in Tampa’s Ybor City Historic District is rooted in traditions and still thriving today through the legacy of Adela Hernandez Gonzmart. “Before I came along, the dance troupe at The Columbia all came from San Antonio, Texas,” said Maria Esparza the dance director at The Columbia Restaurant. Esparza said the legacy of The Columbia Restaurant is not only felt in Florida, but around the world. To mark its 115th anniversary last year, The Columbia Restaurant released a special edition anniversary cookbook recounting Adela Gonzmart’s iconic recipes.

(AP Photo/Paul White)MADRID – Artists at one of Madrid’s best-known flamenco bars put on a final outdoor show Thursday, marking its closure after 140 years because of COVID-19 pandemic restrictions that have shuttered entertainment venues. A female flamenco dancer dressed in black performed in the street outside Villa-Rosa, while others threw flamenco costumes from balconies into the street and male singer Juañarito performed a flamenco song. “The situation is now unsustainable, with so many overheads for a year with the bar closed without any (financial) assistance," the flamenco show’s director, Rebeca Garcia, said.
