Serbia charged by FIFA for team, fans conduct at World Cup

DOHA, Qatar — (AP) — FIFA brought disciplinary charges against Serbia on Monday for alleged misconduct by players and fans including offensive chants at a World Cup match against Switzerland. Tensions flared in the stands and on the field in a rematch of their stormy game at the 2018 World Cup that revived ethnic Balkan rivalries. FIFA didn't specify which incidents at Stadium 974 led to charges relating to "misconduct of players and officials," discrimination and "misconduct of players and officials." Anti-Kosovo chants were heard from the section of Serbia fans, who targeted Shaqiri with verbal abuse in the first half. ___AP World Cup coverage: https://apnews.com/hub/world-cup and https://twitter.com/AP_SportsCopyright 2022 The Associated Press.

(Owen Humphreys/PA via AP) (Owen Humphreys)NEWCASTLE, England — (AP) — With his team's Champions League qualification ambitions in ruins, Arsenal midfielder Granit Xhaka felt it was time to deliver some home truths. This night was all about Arsenal, though, and whether its players could keep Champions League qualification in their own hands. Arsenal will host Everton at the same time and knows a win still might not be enough to get back in the Champions League after a five-year absence. The result meant Chelsea, in third place, was sure of finishing in the top four and qualifying for the Champions League.

Bold approach proves costly for Arsenal in latest slipup

Arsenal's manager Mikel Arteta reacts during the English Premier League soccer match between Burnley and Arsenal at Turf Moor stadium in Burnley, England, Saturday, March 6, 2021. Arsenal midfielder Granit Xhaka received a short pass from goalkeeper Bernd Leno, took a slightly heavy touch onto his weaker right foot, then attempted a dangerous pass across the face of goal around Burnley striker Chris Wood. “It’s the way we play and the way we want to play,” said Arteta, whose side had gone ahead through Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang. He was sent off in the teams’ meeting at Emirates Stadium in December and also in their game in January 2017. The team hasn't played in the Champions League since the 2016-17 campaign, missing out last season after a late collapse.

Youngsters deliver for Arsenal as scrutiny shifts to Lampard

Arteta had billed the coming week, starting with the visit of Chelsea, as a “crucial” period that would determine which direction Arsenal was heading this season. A first league victory in nearly two months was vital, therefore, to boost Arsenal players' fragile confidence — even if it only lifted them into 14th place. “It's something to build on.”It took 90 minutes for the scrutiny that was hovering over Arteta to drift toward his Chelsea counterpart, Frank Lampard. That's three losses in the last four league games for Chelsea, which has dropped to seventh place and whose identity — and best lineup — is increasingly hard to decipher. The result kept Leicester above United in the standings after they started the day in second and third place.

Everton loses last unbeaten record in unpredictable EPL

Everton was the last side to relinquish its undefeated record in this most unpredictable of seasons, though the 2-0 loss at Southampton didn’t knock Carlo Ancelotti’s side off the top of the standings on Sunday. Playmaker James Rodriguez was quiet and striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin failed to score in a league game for the first time this season. Aston Villa was the other unbeaten team coming into this round but was outclassed in a 3-0 defeat by Leeds on Friday. The win over Everton came on the one-year anniversary of Southampton's 9-0 loss to Leicester. By stooping to head home a cross from fellow substitute Cengiz Under following a rapid counter-attack in the 80th minute, Vardy scored his 11th Premier League goal against Arsenal.

Slow starts, few home comforts: Early themes in EPL restart

(AP photo/Jon Super, Pool)The first full round of games of the Premier League restart has almost been completed, with just one team yet to play. Seven of the 11 games so far have had goalless first halves. Less than half of the teams have chosen to take up that opportunity in the Premier League. Across the 11 games, 10 of the 22 teams chose to make all five subs. According to the Premier Injuries website that tracks injuries sustained in Englands top division, there have been seven confirmed in-play injuries since the restart and only one James Milner (left hamstring) has been a muscular problem.

Another loss, another injury: Arsenal struggles on PL return

Things are going from bad to worse for Arsenal in the early days of the Premier Leagues resumption. Sure enough, it was the French striker who scored the winning goal in the fifth minute of stoppage time. Some of their players need to learn what is humility, especially one of them, Maupay said, without mentioning Guendouzi by name. Arteta lost midfielder Granit Xhaka and defender Pablo Mari to injury against City, with Mari unlikely to return before next season. Ben Chilwell was mobbed by his Leicester teammates after smashing home a rising, angled shot off the inside of the post in the 90th minute for what looked like the winning goal.
