Celtics lose to Cavaliers in OT after Grant Williams' pre-FT chirping massively backfires
Somehow, there is a worse way to lose a game than missing two free throws in a tie game at the end of regulation. The Celtics had the ball with 5.8 seconds remaining after a pair of game-tying free throws from Donovan Mitchell. That set up a pair of potential game-winning free throws for Williams, who had been an 86.4% free throw shooter over the last two seasons. To the Cavaliers' credit, they tried to do everything they could to ice Williams after his first missed free throw. Those free throw attempts were his only trip to the line of the night.wftv.com
Grant Williams' boneheaded move at end of Finals rematch costs him more than just ejection
Grant Williams of the Boston Celtics did a pretty dumb thing during Saturday's NBA Finals rematch against the Golden State Warriors, and now he has to get out his wallet and pay the price. The NBA announced on Monday that Williams is being fined $20,000 for punching the ball into the crowd near the end of the game. Williams will now miss their game against the Cleveland Cavaliers on Friday. While it didn’t appear to be intentional, it triggered the technical foul and ejection. The 23-year-old has averaged 9.5 points and 4.3 rebounds so far this season, his fourth with the Celtics. Monday's loss marked the first for the Celtics this season, snapping their three-game win streak to open the year.wftv.com

Worst NBA media day in recent memory was full of obfuscation
Never has the discussion been focused so little on basketball during the NBA's annual media day. 'That's not the Robert Sarver that I know'We are two weeks removed from the NBA suspending Phoenix Suns managing partner Robert Sarver for the season following an investigation into allegations of racism, misogyny and other workplace misconduct. "It's tough for me, because that's not the Robert Sarver that I know," Suns star Devin Booker told reporters. 'It's been hell for us': Ime Udoka put Boston Celtics in no-win situation
They don't know, either. Which is why it is hard to believe Celtics players are not as informed, but that is the position they are taking. "I don't know, so it's hard for me to answer if things were handled the right way or if they weren't, because I don't know all the details." "I don't know. The sum total of what the Celtics are willing to share certainly suggests Udoka will never coach them again.wftv.com
NBA unveils No. 6 patch to honor Bill Russell across league
"We've heard things like 'pioneer,' 'trailblazer,'" Smart said Monday while wearing a patch honoring the Celtics Hall of Famer who died this summer. "To mention, you know, Bill Russell and the impact that he brought to this game is undeniable." The Celtics have other tributes planned, with two nights set aside to honor Russell’s legacy, including the Oct. 18 opener. 6 can keep it, and Nuggets center DeAndre Jordan was among those who said he would do so to honor Russell’s legacy. “I don’t know anybody that talks about him or knew him that had anything negative to say.”In addition to the jersey patch, teams will also have a No.wftv.com

Heat-Celtics game postponed by NBA due to virus protocols
Boston Celtics center Robert Williams III (44) dunks the ball over Miami Heat guards Avery Bradley (11) and Andre Iguodala (28) during the second half of an NBA basketball game, Wednesday, Jan. 6, 2021, in Miami. That process would not have been completed in time for the 7 p.m. game, so the league called it off. Boston was preparing to play the game with eight available players; the Celtics have 17 on their roster, seven were out due to the COVID-19 protocols and two more with injuries. The other was Dec. 23, an Oklahoma City at Houston game where the Rockets did not have the required eight players available. They were in Miami for a game on Wednesday, and Bradley played in that game for the Heat.

(AP Photo/Elise Amendola)BOSTON – The Boston Celtics could be without stars Jayson Tatum, Jaylen Brown and a number of other players because of coronavirus safety protocols when they face Miami on Sunday. The Celtics are listing Tatum as doubtful and Brown as questionable for the rematch of the Eastern Conference finals. With Kemba Walker and Romeo Langford unavailable because of injuries, the Celtics could have the minimum eight players required to start a game. Beset by its own coronavirus problems, Philadelphia dressed an injured player Saturday so it could field a team to play against Denver.

(AP Photo/Marta Lavandier)MIAMI – Payton Pritchard wasn't there last season when the Boston Celtics lost to the Miami Heat in the Eastern Conference finals. Pritchard's putback with two-tenths of a second left capped a wild finish, and the Celtics beat the Heat 107-105 in the first matchup this season of last year's East finalists. Jimmy Butler had 26 points for Miami, which got 16 points from Duncan Robinson, 15 points from Bam Adebayo and 14 from Goran Dragic. The Heat cut the lead to eight by halftime, part of what became a 39-17 run that saw Miami lead by five in the third quarter.
Back to the Finals: Heat oust Celtics, move to title series
Bam Adebayo scored a season-high 32 points and grabbed 14 rebounds, Butler scored 22 points and the Heat won the Eastern Conference finals for the sixth time by topping the Boston Celtics 125-113 on Sunday night. The Heat won the series 4-2 — and now, they’ll see LeBron James and the Los Angeles Lakers for the title. Boston took the lead twice more, with Adebayo answering both times, first with a dunk, then a go-ahead three-point play with 6:16 left. Heat: The Heat are now guaranteed no less than $4,399,686 for their playoff share, and that number would rise to $5,791,041 if they win the title. CROSS-SPORT SUPPORTThe Celtics and Heat were getting some support from afar before Game 6.
Back to work: Celtics, Heat start getting ready for Game 4
That lead is down to 2-1 now, the Celtics playing brilliantly in Game 3 and leading wire-to-wire to take a bunch of newfound momentum into Game 4 of the series on Wednesday night. “Our spirit is right, our head is right, our energy is there, so I think we’re responding the right way,” Miami wing Jae Crowder said. But it’s Miami still leading the series, which is why the Celtics are seeking to show up for Game 4 with the same aggression that carried them in Game 3. “We know we’re going to have to play the best game that we’ve played in Game 4 of this series to have a chance to win. That’s just the way series work.

Sports stop again, but this time players decide when they resume
And other athletes across the sports world also said they weren't ready to resume playing. NBA players considered not playing again the rest of the postseason and going home to their communities, although they decided Thursday they wanted to continue, according to a person with knowledge of the details. This is a affirmatively day of reflection, a day of informed action and mobilization, WNBA players union president Nneka Ogwumike said on ESPN. NBA players agreed to resume their season in July at Disney, making clear they intended to chase social justice reform just as passionately as a championship. Play had been set to resume at 4 p.m. with Game 6 of the Western Conference series between Utah and Denver.
