Looking back at October’s 3 big hurricanes over last 5 years

Here's a look back at three hurricanes that all happened in October.

A look back at 2 October hurricanes with lasting impacts in Florida

There are two hurricanes in recent history that have done their fair share of damage to the Sunshine State, including Central Florida. Hurricane Matthew formed off the coast of Africa in late September of 2016 and moved into the Caribbean as a tropical storm. By Oct. 7 the eye of Hurricane Matthew was just offshore from Central Florida. Hurricane Michael was another M storm that was retired after wreaking havoc on the panhandle in October 2018. Hurricane Dorian: How does it compare to Matthew, Floyd?

ORLANDO, Fla.- - Hurricane Dorian, no matter where it decides to track will bring impacts to all of Central Florida. The projected path of Dorian has looked very similar to that of Hurricane Matthew in 2016 and to a lesser degree Hurricane Floyd in 1999. Matthew was 20-30 miles off the coast as a Category 3 hurricane with winds of 120 mph. Floyd was approximately 115 miles off the coast, but was a very large Category 3 storm. Dorian will track much closer to the coast when compared to Floyd.

Teams prepare A1A, still vulnerable from Matthew, for Hurricane Dorian

FLAGLER COUNTY, Fla. - Flagler County is bracing for Hurricane Dorian and the effects it could have on State Road A1A, still vulnerable after Hurricane Matthew wiped out almost 3 miles of Atlantic Avenue. "We met with the project team for the A1A project yesterday, so they're in the process right now of removing things that could be projectiles," Flagler Beach police Chief Matthew Doughney said. Dorian strengthened to a Category 1 hurricane Wednesday afternoon, according to the National Hurricane Center. [UPDATES: Track, computer models, satellite for Dorian | Hurricane Dorian forecast to hit Central Florida as Category 3 storm]There are three projects currently underway along the 6 miles of beach, including a submerged seawall on the north end that isn't finished but is in place. Flagler County is also bracing for more flooding because of the lunar tide.

Ormond Beach approves stormwater assessment

Ormond Beach's stormwater system was built in the 1950s, and the city experienced flooding during Hurricane Irma and Hurricane Matthew. The city will pay $250,000 to Geosyntec Consultants to focus on older parts of town, areas around Ormond Beach Middle School and areas east of U.S. 1ORMOND BEACH Tired of flooding after a heavy summer afternoon rain? "This will be our second major update of the system," said Shawn Finley, city engineer for Ormond Beach. According to Finley, the city's current stormwater system was built in the 1950s. The storm also washed out out a 1.3-mile stretch of State Road A1A between Ormond Beach and Flagler Beach.

Residents hit by 2 hurricanes face wait for long-term funds

Hogshead said South Carolina was already established as a grantee, whereas North Carolina had to apply for grantee status before receiving funds. HUD spokesman Brian Sullivan declined to comment beyond referring a reporter to online materials that characterize North Carolina as a "slow spender" of its Matthew-related grant. HUD announced in May it will award North Carolina $336.5 million in community block grants for the storm, but spending rules must be settled first. Organizations including Habitat for Humanity and Baptists on Mission volunteer labor for STEP repairs. Avis Rankins, 52, didn't think the Spring Lake home she shares with her mother was livable after STEP repairs.
