Jackson water crisis forces residents to find alternatives

— (AP) — The water pressure at James Brown’s home in Jackson was so low the faucets barely dripped. Lumumba said Jackson’s water system is troubled by short staffing and “decades of deferred maintenance.” He said the influx of water from torrential rain changed the chemical composition needed for treatment, which slowed the process of pushing water out to customers. “When, I have no idea.”Like many cities, Jackson faces water system problems it can’t afford to fix. Lumumba said last week that fixing Jackson's water system could cost $200 million, but Tuesday he said the cost could run to "quite possibly the billions of dollars." Mississippi is receiving $75 million to address water problems as part of a bipartisan infrastructure bill.

NYC temporary morgue lingers, a reminder of pandemic's pain

The deceased died during the coronavirus pandemic and were being stored at a temporary morgue in Brooklyn. The fenced-off temporary morgue on a pier in an industrial part of Brooklyn is out of sight and mind for many as the city celebrates its pandemic progress by dropping restrictions and even setting off fireworks. "There was way too much death for the system to handle," recalls Amy Koplow, the executive director of the Hebrew Free Burial Association, which is interring some Jewish people who were at the temporary morgue. Meanwhile, Rabbi Regina Sandler-Phillips — who has organized volunteers to keep at-home vigils for the dead around the world, especially the unclaimed and unnamed — ventures periodically to an unobtrusive spot near the temporary morgue. The pain surrounding the facility’s creation and continued use “highlights the difficulties of how we honor the dead,” she says.

Former athletes, sports shows take lead on social justice

Former athletes have a pipeline to advance into sports media as commentators, and many popular shows feature a Black man or woman as a host. Instead, it turned into a forum for players to express their feelings about racial and social issues after practice was canceled. Brown added that athletes who speak out need to be articulate, informed and mindful that their words have staying power. For Rose, the era of athletes sticking to sports is over in part because President Donald Trump hasnt been shy about criticizing NBA and NFL players who disagree with him. If hes acknowledging NFL players who are kneeling and he says, They deserve to be fired, that now becomes a sports topic.

SC high court ruling may finally settle James Brown estate

Brown's union with Hynie has long been the center of the evolving legal troubles following his death at the age of 73 on Christmas Day 2006. But years of drug problems and financial mismanagement caused his estate to dwindle. Henry McMaster who, as South Carolinas attorney general, stepped in to facilitate a 2009 settlement after Browns estate had been floundering in court for years. The justices ruled again in the case two years later, ordering all estate proceedings halted pending further evaluation by a lower court. The ongoing litigation since Browns passing has thwarted his expressed wish that his estate be used for educational purposes ... a point we find both extraordinary and lamentable, the court wrote.
