Opera singer Maria Ewing, wife of Peter Hall, dead at 71
DETROIT — (AP) — Maria Ewing, a soprano and mezzo-soprano noted for intense performances who became the wife of director Peter Hall and the mother of actor-director Rebecca Hall, has died at age 71. Ewing met Peter Hall in 1978 when she sang Dorabella in a staging of Mozart’s “Cosi Fan Tutte” at Britain’s Glyndebourne Festival directed by Hall and led by conductor Bernard Haitink. Ewing married Hall, a founder of the Royal Shakespeare Company and then director of Britain’s National Theatre, in 1982. “The Met has no manners,″ Ewing and Hall told the Chicago Tribune. Hall directed Ewing in 1986 in the title role of Strauss’ “Salome” at the LA Opera, in which she stripped to fully nude at the end of the Dance of the Seven Veils.

Verdi was a specialty, and the last of his 2,552 Met performances was the company’s previous Verdi Requiem in December 2017. The pandemic caused the Met to cancel more than 275 performances, including its entire 2020-21 season, plus an international tour. Programs were digital only -- the Met said printed versions will be restored when the season starts. On a night to remember those who perished, the Met made city life seem a lot closer to normal.

In one instance, the Met accused Levine of inappropriately touching a musician starting in 1979 and six more times until 1991. The following February, he became principal conductor for the Met’s 1973-74 season, assisting music director Rafael Kubelik, and became music director with the 1976-77 season. Levine was downgraded to music director when he joined the Boston Symphony Orchestra in 2004.
Nzet-Sguin got $392,152 in initial part of 1st Met season
NEW YORK Yannick Nzet-Sguins earned $392,152 during his first portion of his first season as the Metropolitan Opera's music director, about a quarter of what James Levine earned in his last full season as music director emeritus. Levine was music or artistic director from 1976-2016, then became music director emeritus after the 2016-17 season. Nzet-Sguin started as music director in 2018-19, two years ahead of schedule, and conducted three operas. His full-time duties as music director dont begin until next season, Met general manager Peter Gelb said. Nzet-Sguin earned $1,380,667 from the Philadelphia Orchestra, where he also is music director, in the return for the year ending Aug. 31, 2018.
