Rays beat Yankees 9-0 to move within 5 games in AL East
ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — (AP) — Jeffrey Springs pitched neatly into the sixth inning, Christian Bethancourt hit a seventh-inning two-run homer, and the Tampa Bay Rays moved within five games of the AL East-leading New York Yankees with a 9-0 victory on Friday night. Tampa Bay has limited the Yankees to 42 runs (32 earned) in 14 games. Tampa Bay entered averaging 13,845 at home. Rays: RHP Tyler Glasnow (Tommy John surgery, Aug. 2021) is expected to start a minor league rehab assignment by throwing one inning with Triple-A Durham next week. UP NEXTYankees RHP Clarke Schmidt (5-3) and Tampa Bay RHP Corey Kluber (9-7) are Saturday night’s starters.

The Yankees have lost 11 of 13 and are 8-17 since reaching the All-Star break at 64-28. New York lost its fifth straight series and was held to three runs or less for the seventh straight game. It was Arrozarena’s fourth homer in five games after the right fielder went homerless in 16 straight games.

Major League Baseball and the players' association agreed to that provision as part of the agreement that ended the lockout. Nineteen additional players remaining eligible for arbitration, with hearings scheduled through June 24. Players and teams usually exchange proposed arbitration salaries in mid-January and argue cases during the first three weeks of February. Teams won five of nine hearings last year and have a 325-247 advantage since arbitration started in 1974. Among approximately 200 players eligible for arbitration at the end of the lockout, the vast majority reached negotiated agreements.
