(AP Photo/Corey Sipkin, File) (Corey Sipkin)EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. — (AP) — Offensive coordinator Jason Garrett walked out to the patio of New York Giants headquarters expecting to talk about the season opener against the Denver Broncos on Sunday. “It’s a tragic time in our country’s history and just having been here, the memories are really vivid for me,” Garrett said. It just was a really, really sad time.”Garrett recently spoke with Kerry Collins, the Giants starting quarterback that season. Giants coach Jim Fassel, who recently died, team officials and players made many trips to New York City after the attacks. That is never an easy place to play and Garrett said the fans made the Giants feel welcome.

Former NY Giants head coach Jim Fassel dead at 71

Jim Fassel dies Former New York Giants coach Jim Fassel, who led the team to Super Bowl XXXV after the 2000 season, died Monday. Jim Fassel, who suffered chest pains earlier, was taken to a Las Vegas hospital, where he died, the newspaper reported. Jim Fassel, who was the Giants’ head coach from 1997 to 2003, took the team to Super Bowl XXXV in Tampa, Florida, where his team lost 34-7 to the Baltimore Ravens. Before taking over the Giants, Fassel was the team’s offensive coordinator in 1992 and held the same position with Denver (1993-94) and Arizona (1996). Jim Fassel, coach who took Giants to Super Bowl, dies at 71

Former New York Giants coach Jim Fassel has died. Fassel was named NFL coach of the year in 1997 and led the team to the 2001 Super Bowl. Fassel, the 1997 NFL coach of the year, guided the Giants from 1997 to 2003, posting a 58-53-1 record. Current Giants coach Joe Judge spoke of Fassel's ties to the team during minicamp Tuesday. He was also part of the coaching staffs at Denver, Oakland, Arizona and Baltimore, as well as head coach at the University of Utah.

Fassel’s son confirmed the death to the Los Angeles Times on Monday. According to the Los Angeles Times, Fassel was taken to a hospital in Las Vegas with chest pains and died of a heart attack.
