US researchers test pig-to-human transplant in donated body

Twice this fall, surgeons at New York University temporarily attached a pig's kidney to blood vessels outside the body of a deceased recipient to watch them work. But scientists still needed to learn more about how to test such transplants without risking a patient’s life. Locke said it wasn't clear if delicate pig kidney blood vessels could withstand the pounding force of human blood pressure -- but they did. The recent string of pig experiments “is a big step forward,” said Dr. David Kaczorowski of the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center. Then there are practical questions such as how to minimize time spent getting pig organs to their destination.

'Boys in the Band' movie keeps hurtful language of original

This image released by Netflix shows, from left, Jim Parsons, Robin De Jesus, Michael Benjamin Washington and Andrew Rannells in a scene from "The Boys in the Band." Parsons, whose character, Michael uses a fair share of the racial, gay, and anti-Semitic slurs, admits he was uncomfortable. Director Joe Mantello, who also helmed the play, agrees that keeping the offensive language helps understand the story and plight of the characters. As Bernard, the only Black member of the group, actor Michael Benjamin Washington believes the language, though painful, is necessary to be truthful and authentic. The original play was a hit, and two years later became a critically acclaimed film.

'Game of Thrones,' 'Veep' ride sentimental wave into Emmys

Frazer Harrison/Getty Images(CNN) - The Emmys usually offer a mix of old and new, but sentimental favorites could be more pronounced at this year's nominations, with "Game of Thrones" defending its crown, "Veep" waging its final campaign and "The Big Bang Theory" having a shot at one last big bang. New series can bring freshness to the awards, even if "The Kominsky Method" brings old pros Michael Douglas and Alan Arkin into play. Wild cards include NBC's quirky "The Good Place," Phoebe Waller-Bridge's Amazon import "Fleabag," and Netflix's "GLOW" and "Russian Doll." In that respect, if the 2019 Emmys feel messier and more disjointed than usual, they might just be a teaser of what's to come. The main Emmy telecast will be held Sept. 22 and televised live by Fox.
