Oh Canada: Thomson 1st Canadian-born World Series manager
HOUSTON — (AP) — Rob Thomson is kind of a big deal back home, as the first Canadian-born manager to take a team to the World Series. While Thomson is a first-time World Series manager, this is the fourth different team Dombrowski has been with at the World Series. He was GM in Detroit when the Tigers went to the 2012 World Series, and part of Boston's last title in 2018. Thomson could become only the third big league manager to win a World Series after being a midseason replacement. Dusty Baker, the 73-year-old manager in his second consecutive World Series with Houston, doesn't really know Thomson.

For Hoskins, Aaron Nola and Bryce Harper — stars drafted into the struggle and stars who chose it — this was the game that saw the void of unfulfilled expectations supplanted by highlights and deafening roars. Demolishing the Braves in Game 3 doesn’t guarantee they will win the series and advance — far from it — but it brought a blueprint to life. Nick Castellanos’ stumbles in the regular season have turned into a string of huge hits in the postseason. These Phillies have something real to bring to the table, something that may even be worthy of a toast.

Nick Castellanos and the Philadelphia Phillies can put the defending World Series champion Braves on the brink of elimination. But he was close enough in a playoff-clincher for the Philadelphia Phillies. The clincher ends an 11-season playoff drought for the Phillies, who were postseason mainstays during their last appearance in 2011. That trip to the playoffs capped a five-year postseason run in Philadelphia that included a World Series championship in 2009. The good news for the Phillies was bad news for the Milwaukee Brewers, who were eliminated from the postseason when Philadelphia clinched MLB's final unclaimed postseason berth. The Phillies will travel on Friday to face either the St. Louis Cardinals or New York Mets in a best-of-three series in MLB's new 12-team playoff format.
