BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — (AP) — Steve Stricker shot a 4-under 68 to maintain a two-stroke lead Friday over Scott McCarron and Padraig Harrington in the second round of the Regions Tradition, the first of five PGA Tour Champions majors. He had only his first bogey of the tournament on the par 5 fifth hole but never lost his lead. “The three-putt kind of put a little skid into my round really quick,” said Stricker, who was captain of the winning U.S. Ryder Cup team at Whistling Straits last year. McCarron, who started on the back nine, had a five-birdie, six-hole stretch before his only bogey of the round on No. 15 to highlight a 70 after joining Wes Short Jr. in second place after the first round.

Play was suspended twice in the afternoon because of rain and lightning, with 30 players unable to finish before dark. After dropping a stroke on the par-4 18th to finish his opening nine, Stuard birdied five of the next six holes in the morning round at Keene Trace. “I felt like my iron play was nice today,” Stuard said. Stuard won the rain-shortened Zurich Classic of New Orleans in 2016 for his lone PGA Tour title. “It was a good start, but in all honesty, it doesn’t really mean much,” Stuard said.

(AP Photo/Eric Risberg)PEBBLE BEACH, Calif. – Patrick Cantlay looked just as good Thursday at Pebble Beach as the last round he played 18 days ago. Bhatia hit all 18 of the small greens at Pebble Beach, the first player to do that at Pebble since Ryan Palmer in 2008. Swinging hard lifts Champ into contention in PGA
Cameron Champ hits from the fairway on the 18th hole during the second round of the PGA Championship golf tournament at TPC Harding Park Friday, Aug. 7, 2020, in San Francisco. (AP Photo/Jeff Chiu)John Daly famously won a PGA Championship 29 years ago by swinging as hard as he could every time he got on the tee. Swinging hard comes naturally to Champ. Before Bryson DeChambeau bulked up and began crushing drives this year, the 25-year-old was the gold standard on the PGA Tour when it came to swing speed and distance. Two negative tests days after that prompted the PGA Tour to change its guidelines and he was playing in Detroit the next week.
Woods in a better place heading into this PGA Championship
Rory McIlroy, of Northern Ireland, hits from the third tee during practice for the PGA Championship golf tournament at TPC Harding Park in San Francisco, Tuesday, Aug. 4, 2020. The PGA Championship is a major he has won four times, more than anyone except Jack Nicklaus and Walter Hagen. A year ago, he played 18 holes a week before the PGA Championship and only nine holes in the three days leading to the opening round. Now he's the two-time defending champion for the PGA, and he found some form last week with a runner-up finish in a World Golf Championship. The PGA Championship has never been known for its sweaters.
Column: The measure of DeChambeau is if anyone copies him
Bryson DeChambeau holds the Rocket Mortgage Classic golf tournament trophy Sunday, July 5, 2020, at Detroit Golf Club in Detroit. DeChambeau won the tournament by three strokes for his first victory of the season and sixth overall. That was John Daly at Crooked Stick in 1991 when he followed his caddie's instructions Kill it! on his way to winning the PGA Championship. Bryson DeChambeau took that to another level last week at the Rocket Mortgage Classic. The real measure of his plan is whether DeChambeau changes the way golf is played.
