AP source: Suarez, Padres agree to $46 million, 5-year deal

SAN DIEGO — (AP) — Reliever Robert Suarez agreed Thursday to remain with the San Diego Padres under a $46 million, five-year contract, according to a person with knowledge of the deal. Manager Bob Melvin was criticized by some for letting Suarez pitch to Harper instead of using left-hander Josh Hader. Melvin said he wanted to get two outs from Suarez in the eighth and the final four outs from Hader. Suarez was especially impressive in the NL Division Series win over the Los Angeles Dodgers, throwing four scoreless innings in three appearances. He pitched two scoreless innings in a wild-card series win against the New York Mets.

Padres' season ends in NLCS with bunch of what-if questions

PHILADELPHIA — (AP) — The San Diego Padres will head into the offseason with a whole bunch of what-ifs? Tatis never played a game for San Diego this season. The Padres expect to get Tatis back early next season and look to build on what they did this season.

New postseason format isn't lowering the bar too much

With an additional wild card in each league, we could have expected the following this year:1. Teams at the top of the standings would be even more secure in their postseason chances down the stretch. Perhaps that's because adding a third wild card in each league hasn't really lowered the bar for making the postseason. The Toronto Blue Jays, currently on pace for 87 wins, hold the third wild card in the American League at the moment. TRIVIA TIMEIf there had been a third wild card in each league last year, which teams would have qualified?
