Haas' Magnussen shocks F1 with first pole at Brazilian GP

SAO PAULO — (AP) — Kevin Magnussen shocked Formula One in Brazilian Grand Prix qualifying on Friday to start the sprint race at Interlagos in pole position. It was the first ever pole for the 30-year-old Danish driver, who celebrated by making faces at the cameras before the third qualifying session was over. On team radio, Magnussen was even more excited: “I never felt like this in my life," he said. Haas spoke about Magnussen's pole position with a touch of disbelief: “What did we just do?” the team posed on Twitter. Friday's results set the grid for Saturday's sprint race, which will determine the starting positions for Sunday's race at Interlagos.

Magnussen’s team, Haas, is the only American constructor currently competing in F1 and is the first U.S.-based outfit to claim a pole position since the 1975 British Grand Prix. Denmark, Magnussen’s birthplace, becomes the 24th country to produce an F1 pole sitter. Haas sent Magnussen out first to start the final qualifying session on intermediate tires with heavier rain incoming. “Thank you to Gene Haas,” Magnussen said “It’s been an incredible journey.”

Haas hopes rebound from worst in F1 helps American growth

We've got the American license, there is not many companies more American than Haas Automation and Gene Haas,” said Guenther Steiner, the team principal of Haas F1 and resident of Mooresville, North Carolina — the heart of NASCAR country. The racing, however, has been daunting since he purchased the assets of the collapsed Marussia F1 team. When the pandemic hit ahead of the 2020 season opener, Steiner and Haas made a decision among the uncertainty to pause spending. Schumacher, the son of F1 great Michael Schumacher, has yet to score points but has a veteran alongside him to help. “She loved NASCAR and, especially, Stewart-Haas Racing, and since Haas F1's team's debut, she became a Formula One fan, too,” Haas said in a statement.

IndyCar and Texas try to save relationship with strong race

IndyCar Texas Auto Racing Rinus Veekay passes Alexander Rossi on the fourth turn during the first practice round of the IndyCar Series auto race at Texas Motor Speedway in Fort Worth, Texas on Saturday, March 19, 2022. Texas has hosted IndyCar since the track opened in 1997 but its existing contract, done by Eddie Gossage, who retired as general manager last year, expires after the race Sunday. But the bigger problem is a track reconfiguration and accommodations done for NASCAR made Texas a poor fit for IndyCar. Jimmie Johnson, the winningest driver at Texas with seven wins in NASCAR, qualified 18th in his IndyCar oval debut. Haas was the worst team in F1 last year but Magnussen qualified seventh in Bahrain for the season-opening race.

Texas has hosted IndyCar since the track opened in 1997 but its existing contract, done by Eddie Gossage, who retired as general manager last year, expires after the race Sunday. IndyCar was up against the NCAA Tournament being played 30 minutes away from the Fort Worth track, but there also was a noticeable lack of promotion or activation in the fifth-largest market in the country.

More than a year since being dropped from Formula One, Kevin Magnussen topped preseason testing in Bahrain on Friday in his first drive back in the seat for Haas, making the most of an extended session just for the American-owned team. Magnussen, who Haas recalled a year after firing him when it needed a last-minute replacement for Russian driver Nikita Mazepin, benefited from an extra hour of testing when he had the cooler Sakhir desert track all to himself to set a leading time of 1 minute, 33.207 seconds.
