Dressel’s winning time was an Olympic record of 47.02 seconds — a mere six-hundredths ahead of defending champion Kyle Chalmers of Australia. She also set an Olympic record in winning the 200-meter butterfly before the relay. All three medalists broke the previous world record of 7:41.50 set by the Aussies at the 2019 world championships.

Caeleb Dressel got his first individual gold medal, the Chinese women put together a record-setting relay and American Sunisa Lee won the women’s all-around gymnastics gold.

The Team USA star took the top spot in the 100-meter freestyle, and his emotions spilled out in an interview afterwards.

Dressel claimed the first individual Olympic gold medal of his career with two furious laps of the pool Thursday morning, winning the 100-meter freestyle over defending champion Kyle Chalmers. He was still ahead at the lone flip, and turned away the Aussie's bid for a second straight gold. Zhang turned in a dominating performance to win China's first swimming gold of these games in the women’s 200-meter butterfly.

Caeleb Dressel lived up to the hype in an Olympics where many of the U.S. favorites have faltered.
