A California agency on Thursday cleared the way for the Oakland Athletics to continue planning a $12 billion waterfront ballpark project. The San Francisco Bay Conservation and Development Commission voted 23-2 to reclassify a 56-acre terminal at the Port of Oakland as a mixed-use area where a new ballpark could be built. The vote is the first in a series of legal hurdles the team would have to overcome before it gets permission to break ground for the project.

Baseball Commissioner Rob Manfred says the Tampa Bay Rays and Oakland Athletics need to reach new ballpark deals soon and left open the strong possibility of considering relocation if agreements are not struck.

Leaders from multiple chambers of commerce throughout the city called for increases in police and public safety resources. The city’s police force of sworn officers now stands at 676, dipping below a 2014 voter-approved measure that required the police department to have at least 678 sworn officers. The city of more than 400,000 people started this year with 723 sworn officers. Oakland has joined other cities in diverting police from some 911 calls to reduce friction between law enforcement and minority groups. With Tuesday's vote, Oakland joins other cities with robust Black Lives Matter protests that have partially restored public safety finances in response to rising homicides, an officer exodus and political pressure.

In a reversal of plans to divert funding from police to social services, Oakland Mayor Libby Schaaf said Monday that she'll push to reverse planned cuts to the city's police department and seek to quickly hire more officers amid a spike in violence and homicides that has left some residents afraid to leave their homes. The mayor's announcement came after a weekend in which three people were killed, including a retired police officer acting as a security guard for a television news crew, bringing the number of homicides to 127 so far this year. To address the violence, Schaaf said she'll ask the city council to reverse funding cuts scheduled to take effect next year, though she still supports diversion efforts.

Bottlenecks at the ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach have spilled over into a neighborhood where cargo trucks are clogging residential streets.

The Oakland, California, police chief spoke out on Monday against city leaders after they voted to divert nearly $20 million from law enforcement amid an alarming spike in crime.

Officials said Friday, March 26, 2021, that the vaccine sites have provided nearly a half-million doses so far. The two sites in Oakland and Los Angeles opened in February for an eight-week pilot program that concludes on April 11. AdOfficials in the county and city of Los Angeles are in discussions about maintaining the site in some fashion, said Dr. Paul Simon, the chief science officer for Los Angeles County. “California’s commitment to equity is much more than just two vaccination sites," she said. It was updated on March 27, 2021 to correct that vaccination sites will close April 11, not April 15.

Tubbs, who later founded the group Mayors for a Guaranteed Income, expects six other cities to launch similar programs by this summer. The reason: White households in Oakland on average make about three times as much annually than black households, according to the Oakland Equity Index. The idea of a guaranteed income dates to the 18th century. A form of guaranteed income could take effect for many parents this year as part of the latest federal stimulus package. Critics of such programs fear that they could eliminate other safety net programs, like Social Security and food stamps.

The Oakland Resilient Families program has so far raised $6.75 million from private donors including Blue Meridian Partners, a national philanthropy group. “Direct investment in the community in response to systemic injustices isn't new.”The idea of a guaranteed income dates to the 18th century. “The fact that mayors are piloting (guaranteed income programs), using political capital to raise capital to allow their constituents to have basic necessities, is a policy failure," Tubbs said. “It's an admission that we need to do more.”It's unclear what a national guaranteed income program would look like. Now some California health officials are wondering if that's still the case as he moves rapidly through his four phases for reopening. In less than 10 days, Newsom has announced rules allowing 47 of the state's 58 counties to reopen restaurants and malls, religious services and, as of Tuesday, hair salons. California has had nearly 100,000 cases of the virus and more than 3,800 people have died. California Health and Human Services Secretary Mark Ghaly said the state guidance is "not a direction or a determination" that a county should allow certain businesses to reopen. Other Democrats supported Newsom's move, including Assemblywoman Cottie Petrie-Norris, who represents parts of Orange County, which was also cleared to reopen restaurants over the weekend.

MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred warned that Oakland could lose the Athletics baseball franchise if the city doesn't drop a lawsuit aimed at halting the construction of a new stadium. Manfred recently held meetings with Mayor Libby Schaaf and City Council President Rebecca Kaplan to discuss a lawsuit against the team's plan to develop a new baseball stadium in Oakland, CBS San Francisco reported.
