Fritz blasts past Zverev as USA leads Germany at United Cup

SYDNEY — (AP) — Taylor Fritz took advantage of a dominant serve to beat Alexander Zverev 6-1, 6-4 as the United States took an early 1-0 lead over Germany Monday at the United Cup mixed teams event in Sydney. Ninth-ranked Fritz won 96 percent (26/27) of first serve points and backed that up with accurate ball-striking to beat 12th-ranked Zverev in 64 minutes. He kept the pressure on to beat Zverev who was playing for only the second time since June when he damaged ligaments in his right ankle during his semifinal against Rafael Nadal at the French Open. The 25-year-old Fritz is now 3-4 in head to head meetings with Zverev and is 2-0 at the United Cup after beating Jiri Lehecka of the Czech Republic in his opening match. If the United States beats Germany or loses by a 2-3 margin it will qualify for the quarterfinals from Group C.Madison Keys was due to follow Fritz on court, looking to extend the United States’ lead in her singles against Jule Niemeier.

The Americans were drawn to face each other in the first round, a rematch of Stephens’ victory in the 2017 final. Keys said she had a feeling she and Stephens would be paired in the first round. She lost again in the first round at Wimbledon before winning a round at the Olympics.

Azarenka hit only six winners but also committed just 12 unforced errors to 33 by Keys of the United States. The Paris prosecutor’s office said a tennis player suspected of participating in a match-fixing scheme last year has been arrested in Paris during the French Open. 72 tennis players in lockdown after virus cases on flights

The number of players in hard quarantine swelled to 72 ahead of the Australian Open after a fifth positive coronavirus test was returned from the charter flights bringing players, coaches, officials and media to Melbourne for the season-opening tennis major. Some players have expressed anger at being classified as close contacts merely for being on board those flights with people who later tested positive. But local government, tennis and health authorities have said all players were warned of the risks in advance. The Australian Open starts Feb. 8 following a week of warmup tournaments at Melbourne Park and the ATP Cup.

Australian Open arrivals hit by 4 COVID-19 positive tests

Health authorities confirmed there'd been three positive tests for COVID-19 returned on Saturday, and another on Sunday. The Australian Open starts on Feb. 8.
