Champion Max Verstappen ends F1 season with 15th win
Max Verstappen, as usual this season, was far ahead of the rest on his way to a record-extending 15th win of the season. “Incredible to win again here, 15th win of the season is unbelievable,” Verstappen said. There was potential for a fight for second place on track and in the championship standings, but little real drama. Perez and Ferrari's Charles Leclerc came into the race equal on points, just like Verstappen and Lewis Hamilton did last year. Errors on track from Leclerc and in Ferrari's race strategy held them back too.

Perez and Leclerc entered the race tied for second in the points standings after Verstappen didn't pull over for his teammate on the final lap in Brazil. And while Perez charged towards Leclerc in the final laps, he was still over a second behind Leclerc at the checkered flag. Ferrari’s Carlos Sainz finished fourth to ensure that Ferrari finished second in the constructor’s standings to Red Bull while Mercedes’ George Russell was fifth. Perez won two races in 2022 as Red Bull won 17 of the season’s 22 races. Leclerc won three races while Sainz won the British Grand Prix.

ABU DHABI, United Arab Emirates — (AP) — Max Verstappen won a record-extending 15th race of the year at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix on Sunday to conclude one of the most dominant seasons in Formula One history. Verstappen stayed ahead of his teammate Sergio Perez at the start and was never seriously challenged after that on his way to the win. Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc held off Perez’s challenge on old tires to finish second and clinch second place in the championship standings, thwarting Red Bull's bid to have its drivers place first and second. Four-time champion Sebastian Vettel placed 10th for Aston Martin as he retires from F1 after 16 years. A hydraulic problem ended Lewis Hamilton's race for Mercedes as the seven-time champion finished an F1 season without a win for the first time in his career.

SAO PAULO — (AP) — Chased to the end by his teammate Lewis Hamilton, Mercedes driver George Russell won his first race in Formula One on Sunday at the Brazilian Grand Prix. It was also Mercedes' first GP win of an otherwise disappointing season with Hamilton making it an impressive 1-2 for the team in a statement of intent for next season. The 24-year-old Russell dominated the race in Sao Paulo from the start, which had him in pole position on the grid. Verstappen and his Red Bull team have already been crowned F1 champions. The Brazilian GP was the penultimate race of the season ahead of Abu Dhabi on Nov. 20.

MEXICO CITY — (AP) — Max Verstappen set the Formula One record for wins in a season Sunday at the Mexico City Grand Prix, where he scored his 14th victory to break the record shared with Michael Schumacher and Sebastian Vettel. Paired with wins at Miami, Montreal and now Mexico City, Verstappen swept the North American portion of this year's F1 schedule. Red Bull has now won nine consecutive races, tying the team record set in 2013. The team has won 16 of 21 F1 races this season with Verstappen and Sergio Perez, winner at Monaco and Singapore. But the fans love their native driver and, before the race, Perez took a ride around the track on the back of a convertible Volkswagen.

MEXICO CITY — (AP) — Max Verstappen inched closer to a record 14th victory of the Formula One season by holding off a pair of Mercedes and Mexican favorite Sergio Perez to win the pole Saturday for the Mexico City Grand Prix. It was the sixth pole of the season for Verstappen, who clinched his second consecutive F1 title earlier this month. Hamilton qualified third, behind teammate George Russell, as the Mercedes drivers seek their first win of the season. He was second to Verstappen a week ago at Circuit of the Americas in Austin, Texas, where Verstappen raced to his record-tying 13th win of the season. Verstappen has not promised to give Perez any favors to help Perez win in front of his adoring fans, but Perez did himself no favors in qualifying fourth.

PARIS — (AP) — Formula One team Red Bull was found to have breached budget regulations last season, with the sport's governing body saying Monday it was guilty of “minor” overspending. The FIA announced the verdict of its investigation into whether some F1 teams had violated the spending regulations in 2021, when Red Bull driver Max Verstappen won his first title on the last lap of the last race. The governing body said Red Bull was “considered to be in procedural and minor overspend breaches of the financial regulations” in 2021, but that any sanctions would be announced at a later date. Going over the budget cap by less than 5% is considered a minor breach. F1 introduced a budget cap of $145 million last year with the aim of creating a more level playing field in F1 and to reduce the spending might of powerhouses like Mercedes, Ferrari and Red Bull.

Verstappen finished first in qualifying on Saturday with a winning lap time of 1 minute, 29.304 seconds at Suzuka. SINGAPORE — (AP) — Max Verstappen's Formula One title celebrations were put on hold after the Red Bull driver placed seventh at a chaotic Singapore Grand Prix, won by his teammate Sergio Perez on Sunday.
