And about 20 years ago, he launched an in-person and online search to find a 1966 GTO like his first car. In 2006, he found a 1966 GTO in Cocoa and in a three-year project restored the car on the frame, installed a 455-cubic-inch V-8 engine, and had it painted "Carousel Red." Now, Hughes said, he can share the fun of the latest version GTO with his wife, Cheryl. The Hugheses' current GTO has a Hurst four-speed manual shift and produces and estimated 430 horsepower. The latest GTO is original equipment except for the changed engine and a beefed-up driveshaft.
