Opposition party to fight next Australia election on climate

The center-left opposition Labor Party’s spokesman on climate change and energy, Chris Bowen, said competing climate policies would become a battle line at the next election, which is due by May. Morrison had gone to the election with the 2030 reduction target it had adopted in 2015 at the Paris climate summit. The Australian Election Study, which has surveyed voters after every election since 1987, found voter concern about the environment was at its greatest during the 2019 poll. The government has yet to release the modeling upon which its net zero plan is based. Ian McAllister, an Australian National University political scientist who co-authored the Australian Election Study report on the last election, said the environment was gaining importance as an election issue.

Deputy spots tiger in industrial park, prompting search in Tennessee

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. Authorities were searching Thursday morning for a tiger in East Tennessee. A deputy spotted the animal Wednesday night at an industrial park, the Knox County Sheriffs Office said in a statement on social media. Several agencies, including animal control, the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency and representatives with the rescue organization Tiger Haven, are helping with the search, the statement said. There were unconfirmed tiger sightings reported overnight in the eastern part of the county, and the search was continuing Thursday morning, dispatchers told news outlets. Knoxville Zoo spokeswoman Tina Rolen said all of its tigers are accounted for, and the zoo has not been involved in the search.

Roster shuffle: Plans change in MLB because of health issues

PHOENIX The Minnesota Twins have shuffled their on-field staff to protect the health of some of their older coaches. I think we all know that we're making the right decision, but that doesn't mean it feels good," Baldelli said. The defending World Series champion Nationals will begin their title defense without Zimmerman and pitcher Joe Ross, who both declined to play because of health concerns. We are one hundred percent supportive of their decision to not play this year, Nationals GM Mike Rizzo said in a statement. Cleveland's 61-year-old manager Terry Francona said he's not nervous, even though he's had previous health issues.

Nationals change course, pay minor leaguers full stipend

WASHINGTON The Nationals changed course and told their minor leaguers on Monday they will receive their full weekly stipends of $400 at least through June after Washington reliever Sean Doolittle tweeted that the teams major league players would cover a planned cut in those payments. Thank you!Its not unusual for big league teams to release minor leaguers at this time of year, although not normally this many. More than 400 young players have been cut with the minor league season in doubt amid the COVID-19 outbreak. Minor league players not on 40-man rosters were promised $400 per week through Sunday by a policy drafted by MLB. Minor leaguers are an essential part of our organization and they are bearing the heaviest burden of this situation as their season is likely to be cancelled.___More AP MLB: https://apnews.com/MLB and https://twitter.com/AP_Sports

Baby hippo at San Diego Zoo gets a name

SAN DIEGO, Calif. A baby hippopotamus born at the San Diego Zoo last month has a name. The zoo says the river hippo calf will be called Amahle (pronounced ah-MA-shay), which means beautiful one in Zulu. Amahle is the ninth hippo calf born at the zoo and the 13th to her mother, Funani. Amahle's father, Otis, is an East African hippo who arrived at the zoo in 2009 specifically to breed with Funani, zoo officials said. Zoo visitors can see Amahle and her mother in the hippo habitat on Tuesdays, Thursdays and weekends, officials said.

Jack White attended baseball game, left to play concert, then returned to finish watching game

The baseball gods must have been on White's side, because the game went deep into the night with extra innings, so White returned to the game with his band after the show to see the game out. FOX reporter Ken Rosenthal noticed White's return to the stadium when cameras showed him back in his seat during the 14th inning. Here's the video of Ken's story, The Raconteurs played The Anthem in DC tonight, google tells me. pic.twitter.com/kcc5fSWXwN Paid man gets bored (@cjzero) August 18, 2019It's a mystery how White found out the game was still going on (maybe the MLB app told him? ), or how he and his bandmates even gained re-entry to the stadium, but it does look like White had the best night of his life.
