CNN has best ratings day ever for Capitol attack
NEW YORK – The attack on the U.S. Capitol last week brought more viewers to CNN than any other single day in the network's 40-year history. CNN averaged 5.2 million viewers last Wednesday, eclipsing its previous high of 5.1 million on Election Day 2016, the Nielsen company said. During the storming of the Capitol itself on Wednesday afternoon, CNN averaged nearly 9 million viewers. MSNBC had 3.67 million, Fox News Channel had 3.1 million, HGTV had 1.12 million and Hallmark had 1.05 million. ABC's “World News Tonight” led the evening news ratings race, averaging 9.2 million viewers.
Sheldon Adelson, casino mogul and GOP donor, dies at 87
Adelson died Monday night from complications related to treatment for non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma, Las Vegas Sands announced Tuesday. “If you do things differently, success will follow you like a shadow,” he said during a 2014 talk to the gambling industry in Las Vegas. In politics, Adelson was a record-breaking campaign donor who had the ear of domestic and international leaders, including President Donald Trump. Late in 2015, Adelson secretly purchased the Las Vegas Review-Journal. Soon his Macao revenue outstripped that of his Las Vegas holdings.

Rashida Jones replaces Phil Griffin as MSNBC president
NEW YORK – Phil Griffin is stepping down as the longtime president of MSNBC, to be replaced early next year by rising NBC News executive Rashida Jones. Griffin, 64, has worked at NBC News for 35 years and has been president of MSNBC since 2008. Jones, who has been with NBC News for the past seven years, is currently chief of breaking news and major events at the network. She just led the network's coverage of the 2020 presidential election and the team preparing Kristen Welker as moderator of the third presidential debate. Cesar Conde, the new chairman of the NBC Universal News Group, has made diversity one of his top priorities.

Rachel Maddow returns to air, describes partner's virus bout
LOS ANGELES – Rachel Maddow made an emotional return Thursday to her MSNBC show, saying her partner’s bout with COVID-19 was so serious they thought it might kill her. Maddow has been off the air for roughly two weeks since disclosing she had been in close contact with someone who tested positive for the coronavirus. Maddow didn’t disclose who it was at the time, but said Thursday evening it was her partner, Susan Mikula. “At one point, we really thought it was a possibility it might kill her and that’s why I’ve been away,” Maddow said. Maddow said her partner is recovering and will be OK, but that it didn’t seem that way at the outset of her illness.
Out magazine names Lizzo, Monae, Maddow to its Out100 list

MSNBC's Rachel Maddow quarantines after coronavirus exposure
LOS ANGELES – MSNBC's Rachel Maddow said Friday she was quarantining after being in contact with someone who tested positive for the coronavirus. Maddow said on social media that she's tested negative so far for COVID-19 but plans to remain at home until it's “safe for me to be back at work without putting anyone at risk.”Maddow, host of MSNBC's most-watched show, has been a key part of the cable channel's election coverage. She was off the air Friday night. “Wishing everyone patience and calm; may these remarkable times bring out the best in all of us,” she wrote in her online message. MSNBC declined to comment on Maddow's announcement.

On Thursday, Oct. 22, 2020, Welker is scheduled to moderate the second and last Presidential debate between President Donald Trump and Democratic presidential candidate former Vice President Joe Biden. The NBC News White House correspondent is scheduled to moderate Thursday's second and last session between Trump and Democrat Joe Biden. While Welker was one of four questioners at a Democratic presidential debate last fall, this is by far the 44-year-old journalist's biggest stage. She's the first Black woman to moderate a presidential debate since Carole Simpson in 1992. Andrea Mitchell, the NBC News correspondent who moderated last fall's Democratic debate with Welker, Rachel Maddow and Ashley Parker, doubted her colleague would be intimidated.

In their dueling town halls, the Democratic presidential candidate reached more viewers on ABC than Trump did for NBC News Thursday night. The Biden town hall reached 14.1 million people on ABC between 8 and 9 p.m. and Trump had 13.5 million combined on NBC, CNBC and MSNBC, the Nielsen company said. “Well, that just happened,” MSNBC's Rachel Maddow said as soon as Trump's town hall with Savannah Guthrie ended, proceeding to launch into a lengthy fact-check. The Biden town hall, with questions from the audience and moderator George Stephanopoulos, lasted 90 minutes.

CBS' five-game average for Sunday afternoon games was 13.59 million viewers, down 12 percent from 2019. With its two games, NBC dominated the prime time ratings, averaging 7.3 million viewers last week. Fox News Channel led the cable networks, averaging 3.23 million viewers in prime time. “Football Night in America,” NBC, 8.75 million.

Conservative authors have also sought attention for new books during the political season. That was the case with Schmidt's book. Trump's audience doesn't match Biden's; president hails CNN

Overall, 15.8 million people watched the final hour of convention coverage Monday, down 16% from Democratic candidate Joe Biden's first night last week. Fox's audience was up 238%, but Democratic convention viewership beat Republicans on ABC, CBS, NBC, CNN and MSNBC. While MSNBC and CNN combined had just under 10 million viewers for Bidens first night, they had 3.6 million for Trump, Nielsen said. Four years ago, opening night drew just under 26 million viewers. NBC's telecast drew 2.28 million viewers, down from 4.29 million four years ago, Nielsen said. The left-leaning MSNBC, where Rachel Maddow, Joy Reid and Nicolle Wallace were anchors, led the way Monday with 5.1 million viewers, up from four years ago. Fox News Channel's audience was unimpressed; the 2.1 million viewers it reached for its hour of convention coverage compared poorly with the 3.4 million viewers that time slot occupant Laura Ingraham had on an average July day.
Coronavirus upends conventions, changes TV coverage
LOS ANGELES The Democratic and Republican conventions will lack for crowds but not television coverage. The Democratic meeting will be virtual, with Biden planning to make his acceptance speech from Wilmington, Delaware. Broadcast networks ABC, CBS and NBC plan an hour of nightly coverage of the conventions at 10 p.m. EDT. CNN's commentators for the Democratic meeting include Van Jones, Jennifer Granholm, Andrew Yang, and Scott Jennings. Commentary for the Republican convention will be handled by Rick Santorum, David Urban, Amanda Carpenter and Granholm.

MSNBC was second with 2.03 million, CNN had 1.59 million, HGTV had 1.29 million and TLC had 1.26 million. ABC's World News Tonight led the evening news networks with an average of 8.9 million viewers.
