Twins lose combo no-hit bid with 1 out in 9th vs Royals
MINNEAPOLIS — (AP) — The Minnesota Twins' bid to pitch a combined no-hitter against the Kansas City Royals ended when Bobby Witt Jr. doubled with one out in the ninth inning. Twins starter Joe Ryan was taken out after throwing 106 pitches in seven innings. The crowd at Target Field booed when Twins manager Rocco Baldelli sent Moran to the mound to start the eighth. HOUSTON — (AP) — Justin Verlander was pulled after pitching six no-hit innings in his major league-leading 16th win and the Astros beat the Minnesota Twins 4-2 Tuesday night in Carlos Correa’s return to Houston. Verlander (16-3) allowed just one runner to reach base — Nick Gordon struck out in the second inning on a wild pitch to get aboard. The Twins scored twice in the ninth and had the bases loaded before Bryan Abreu struck out Jake Cave to end it. That was the only hit for Correa, who was selected first overall by the Astros in 2012 and spent his first seven seasons in Houston. Dubón gave Houston the lead with an RBI single in the second inning and Trey Mancini made it 2-0 with his run-scoring double in the fourth.

Baldelli was ejected in the top of the 10th after erupting after the umpires said that Twins catcher Gary Sanchez blocked the plate during a play at home that eventually gave the Blue Jays the win. Merrifield collided with Sanchez at the plate, and was initially called out — something that would have ended the inning. The Blue Jays walked away with the 3-2 win, which officially splits their four-game series against the Twins.

Minnesota had taken a 6-3 lead in the top of the 10th on an RBI single from Carlos Correa and a two-run homer by Max Kepler off Eli Morgan (4-2). The teams have split four games in the five-game series, keeping the Twins’ lead over the second-place Guardians in the AL Central at two. The Guardians made it 3-0 in the third when Kwan singled, stole second and scored on Naylor’s sacrifice fly.

The AL Central-leading Twins conducted a soft launch, with Correa in the lineup as the designated hitter to face surging Yankees left-hander Nestor Cortes. In his first season with Minnesota, Correa was batting .279 with nine doubles, three homers, 17 runs and 16 RBIs in 35 games before he got sick. The Twins still have 13 players on the injured list, and right-hander Joe Ryan remains on the COVID-19 injured list.
