Lauer says Ronan Farrow's work on him was shoddy and biased

NEW YORK Matt Lauer accused author Ronan Farrow on Tuesday of shoddy and biased journalism in his book Catch and Kill that included what Lauer says is a false accusation that the former Today show host raped a co-worker. Lauer, similarly, said Farrow had not corroborated several specific accusations against him in the 2019 book, Catch and Kill.NBC fired Lauer in 2017 for an inappropriate relationship with a co-worker. In Farrow's book, that former co-worker, Brooke Nevils, said Lauer raped her in a Sochi hotel room during the 2014 Winter Olympics. Farrow tweeted a brief response to Lauer's lengthy piece: All I'll say on this is that Matt Lauer is just wrong. Catch and Kill was thoroughly reported and fact-checked, including with Matt Lauer himself.Farrow's publisher, Little, Brown and Co., said it fully supported the author.

Warren, Sanders, other Democrats call for NBC sexual abuse probe ahead of presidential debate on MSNBC

On the eve of Wednesday's Democratic debate on MSNBC, four presidential contenders called for an independent investigation into sister network NBC in the wake of allegations of sexual abuse. CNBC, MSNBC and NBC are all units of NBCUniversal, which is owned by Comcast. MSNBC and The Washington Post are scheduled to host the next Democratic debate Wednesday in Atlanta. Rachel Maddow, a popular MSNBC anchor, delivered a monologue in prime time in October questioning why the company did not contract out an independent investigation. Donald Trump has been credibly accused of sexual harrassment and sexual abuse by dozens of women.

NBC News Digital staff announces plan to unionize

On Tuesday, NBC News laid off about a dozen staffers while sunsetting its digital video studio "NBC Left Field." The New York Times, which first reported the union plans, wrote that NBC News digital employees uncovered pay disparities between white men and women and minorities after creating an anonymous spreadsheet of salaries. The union includes about 150 editorial employees at NBCNews.com, Today.com, Stay Tuned, MSNBC.com and online streaming network NBC News Now. We welcome this dialogue from within our digital organization, and any constructive conversation aimed at building the future of NBC News Digital and ensuring that we're the best we can be. NBC News Digital unionized through the News Guild, which also represents employees at BuzzFeed News, Ziff Davis and Quartz, among other publications.

NBCUniversal says sexual harassment victims can speak out

Former NBC News employees who signed nondisclosure agreements can come forward with their stories of sexual harassment at the network, NBCUniversal said in a statement. The statement was first reported by MSNBC's Rachel Maddow, who read it on air. "Any former NBC News employee who believes that they cannot disclose their experience with sexual harassment as a result of a confidentiality or non-disparagement provision in their separation agreement should contact NBCUniversal and we will release them from that perceived obligation," the statement reads. Maddow read the statement before interviewing Ronan Farrow, the Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist who has reported on sexual misconduct in the media industry. Lauer has denied the accusations of rape, saying the sexual encounters he had were consensual.

Activists ask NBC to release NDAs, hold independent probe

On Saturday, Tina Tchen, incoming president and CEO of Time's Up, said NBC Universal, while taking a useful first step, hadn't gone far enough to release employees from non-disclosure agreements or other restrictive clauses. "If NBC Universal is truly committed to letting survivors and employees speak out about sexual harassment at the network, it should simply release them from their non-disclosure agreements," she said. "There is no reason to place the burden on those who choose to speak to reveal themselves in advance to NBC Universal. Also calling for further action by NBC Universal was Linda Vester, a former NBC News employee who has accused NBC star anchor Tom Brokaw of sexual harassment and now heads a group called Silence Breakers Alliance. Vester has also been calling for NBC Universal to allow an independent inquiry.

Ronan Farrow apologizes for comments on Fox's handling of harassment

Appearing on Fox News last Thursday to discuss his new book "Catch and Kill," Farrow criticized how NBC News has responded to claims of sexual harassment. As he called out NBC News, Farrow mentioned that Fox News dealt in recent years with its own problems related to sexual harassment and settlements. After his comment about Fox News' handling of its scandal, Farrow said "now there's a tough conversation at NBC." Huddy, Roginsky, and Holder have all settled claims of sexual harassment with 21st Century Fox, the former parent company of Fox News. The letter ended with the women asking Farrow how he concluded that Fox News had done a "great job" confronting issues of sexual harassment.

Ronan Farrow says National Enquirer shredded Trump-related documents

Ronan Farrow attends Variety's Power of Women: New York at Cipriani Wall Street on April 13, 2018 in New York City. American Media Inc. received immunity in exchange for cooperation in the investigation that ensued. Speculation centered on what American Media might have kept in a notorious safe in the company's office. In response to CNN's request for comment about the allegations of shredding, American Media Inc. said that Farrow's reporting is "completely untrue." Much of Farrow's book is about his reporting on Harvey Weinstein and how he claims it was stymied by NBC News, which the network has strongly denied.

Farrow details lack of enthusiasm at NBC for Weinstein story

Farrow's former producer, Rich McHugh, wrote in Vanity Fair that NBC abdicated its responsibility to relentlessly pursue and tell the truth. Farrow wrote of doubts by Oppenheim that Weinstein was a figure many viewers knew or even cared about. That colleague told Farrow that Lauer raped her in a Sochi hotel room in 2014; Lauer described the sex as consensual. Farrow wrote that Weinstein "had made it known to the network that he was aware of Lauer's behavior and was capable of revealing it." The bad blood between Farrow and NBC News has led to a laundry list of he said-he said claims.

New book questions NBC's handling of Weinstein, Lauer

In the book, Farrow suggests that Weinstein used his knowledge of Lauer's alleged behavior Lauer was fired by NBC for "inappropriate sexual behavior" as leverage with the network to oppose the story's publication. Allegations of sexual misconduct by individuals such as Weinstein, Lauer and others helped spur the #MeToo movement, which has led to the toppling of powerful men across various industries including at multiple news organizations. Lauer, who was terminated by the network two years ago after Nevils complained of "inappropriate sexual behavior" on Lauer's part, hit back hard Wednesday against her new accusations of rape.
