Blake drops civil rights lawsuit against Wisconsin officer

MADISON, Wis. — (AP) — Jacob Blake has dropped his federal civil rights lawsuit against the Wisconsin police officer who shot him during a domestic disturbance and left him paralyzed from the waist down. Sheskey, who is white, shot Blake, who is Black, after Blake resisted arrest during the disturbance and appeared to turn toward Sheskey with a knife. Prosecutors cleared Sheskey of any criminal wrongdoing and later dropped the sexual assault charges against Blake as part of a plea deal. Blake filed the civil rights lawsuit in March 2021 alleging that Sheskey had used excessive force on him. Court records indicate that attorneys for the two men filed notice on Friday that they had agreed to dismiss the case with prejudice, which means Blake can't refile it.

Prosecutors seek restrictions on Rittenhouse after bar stop

In the “Good Morning America” interview, Blake, who was shot seven times, said he shouldn't have grabbed his knife. But Richards said Rittenhouse is not and has never been a member of a white supremacist group. After his Jan. 5 arraignment, Rittenhouse, his mother and several other adults went to Pudgy's Pub, where he was seen drinking beer, according to prosecutors. Although the drinking age is 21, Rittenhouse could legally drink alcohol in Wisconsin because he was with his mother. The prosecutors' motion states that Rittenhouse posed outside the bar for a photo with two men as they all gestured an “OK” sign with their hands, which has become a symbol used by white supremacists.

Ben Crump, an attorney for Jacob Blake's family, spoke out Wednesday against the Kenosha, Wisconsin, district attorney's decision to not charge the officer who shot Blake in the back, saying it "does nothing to help this issue of mistrust." "We are going to file a civil rights excessive use of force 1983 civil rights lawsuit against the Kenosha Police Department," he said. That outrage was rekindled Tuesday when the district attorney announced that Sheskey would not be charged. This is an unfortunate reality that far too many young Black kids will have to see." In a statement released Tuesday evening following Graveley's announcement, the assistant attorney general for the DOJ's civil rights division and U.S. Attorney Matthew D. Krueger said "a federal civil rights investigation into the shooting of Jacob Blake is ongoing."

A police officer shot Blake in the back multiple times after responding to a domestic dispute on Aug. 23, 2020. On Tuesday, Jan. 5, 2021, a Wisconsin prosecutor declined to file criminal charges against the officer who shot Blake. After the Aug. 23 shooting that left Blake paralyzed, the decision on whether to charge Rusten Sheskey came down to a familiar question: Was the Kenosha officer justified in using force to protect himself? Those included requiring body cameras and dashcams, a standard protocol for independent investigations and an easy-to-access database of disciplinary actions. The city had planned to acquire body cameras in 2022, but after Blake's shooting, that timetable was sped up to put the cameras in use this year.
