Pitch clocks, shift limits, larger bases in MLB's future

(AP Photo/John Minchillo) (John Minchillo)LOS ANGELES — (AP) — Justin Verlander, Gerrit Cole and the rest of major league pitchers are likely to be looking over their shoulders next season: at a pitch clock. “We’ve known it’s been an issue and its importance and we don’t seem to clean it up.”Major League Baseball also is considering shift limits, larger bases, restrictions on pickoff attempts and — perhaps in 2024 — limited use of robot umpires to call balls and strikes. MLB’s average through Thursday was 20.5 seconds with no runners and 27.3 second with runners. “Little by little, everything they’re doing in the minor leagues is going to affect their big league game, which is great,” he said.

That one put the Yankees ahead 8-1, and they finished the night 5-4 against the Red Sox this season entering Sunday's series finale. After hard base hits from Judge and Anthony Rizzo, Carpenter rocked a three-run homer to right for a 4-1 lead. Red Sox manager Alex Cora said before the game that he would push Pivetta back in the rotation after the All-Star break to get him a breather.

Bosox LHP Rodrguez out for year, inflamed heart from COVID
NEW YORK Boston Red Sox left-hander Eduardo Rodrguez will miss the entire season because of heart inflammation caused by COVID-19. The Red Sox said July 7 the the 27-year-old had tested positive for COVID-19. "Heres one of the best pitchers in the game last year and he's not able to perform on the field," Red Sox manager Ron Roenicke said. The Red Sox rotation includes Nathan Eovaldi, left-hander Martn Prez and Ryan Weber. This case, while its something that is persistent, is not something that has that has impacted or damaged the functioning of his heart, Bloom said.
