news.yahoo.comSarah Ferguson decries ‘horrifying’ plan to build Amazon-style warehouse in countryside
The Duchess of York has spoken out against "horrifying" plans for a new Amazon-style warehouse in the countryside which involves felling dozens of trees she has cherished since childhood. Sarah Ferguson, 61, said trees in the village of Drummer, Hants, had encouraged her love of nature as a child while growing up on a farm and were the inspiration for her children's book 'The Enchanted Oak Tree', which was published last year. But under proposals already given the green light by Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council, an area of land will be "brutally chopped down" for a 220,000 square-metre distribution hub thought to be used by the online giant Amazon. In total, 67 mature oaks, three Grade A mature beech trees, plus 13 other oak trees - all of which support 2,300 species of wildlife - will be wiped out. Calling for the plans to be halted before building work can begin, Ms Ferguson said: "Even now at 61, and as a new grandmother, I have the most vivid and happy memories of growing up on a farm in Dummer, near Basingstoke. "I remember my father telling me always to recognise and be grateful for the beauty of our surroundings, a lesson I have carried into adulthood and passed on to my own daughters.
