Bills' Von Miller to miss rest of season after knee surgery
ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. — (AP) — The Buffalo Bills’ top pass-rusher Von Miller will miss the remainder of the season after having surgery to repair an injury to the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee, coach Sean McDermott announced on Wednesday. McDermott said the ligament damage was discovered during a previously scheduled exploratory surgery, which was conducted on Tuesday in Texas. Miller previously revealed he sustained damage to his meniscus. “We care for Von in this case, and we’ll miss him.”The Bills signed Miller to a six-year contract in free agency. Miller is the NFL’s active leader in sacks with 123 1/2 and he leads the Bills with eight sacks this season.wftv.com
Bills' Von Miller out for season after exploratory surgery turned ACL repair
Buffalo Bills defensive end Von Miller underwent surgery. It was exploratory, and he got an ACL repair. Miller suffered a knee injury in Week 12 against the Detroit Lions and had to be carted off the field. The Bills placed him on injured reserve to leave the door open for his return, now Miller won't come back at all. Then, exploratory surgery yesterday revealed the ACL was, in fact, torn.wftv.com
AP source: Tests reveal no tears in Bills' Miller's knee
ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. — (AP) — Tests on Buffalo Bills star pass-rusher Von Miller's injured right knee showed no ligament tears, a person with direct knowledge of the injury told The Associated Press. The person spoke to the AP on condition of anonymity Friday because the team has not provided any updates on Miller’s injury. While the results are encouraging, Miller is still being evaluated and is expected to be out indefinitely, the person said. He had no immediate updates on either Miller or starting left tackle Dion Dawkins following Buffalo’s 28-25 win over the Detroit Lions on Thursday. The injury is to the same knee that forced Miller to miss seven games in 2013.wftv.com

As of Saturday morning, the team is scheduled to leave from Buffalo Niagara International Airport at 3:30 p.m. ETThe team still wanted to leave for Detroit on Saturday afternoon as they normally would for a road game, Bills coach Sean McDermott said Friday. The NFL announced late Thursday that it was moving the Bills' home game against the Browns to Detroit as Western New York saw record snowfall. The Bills, however, have to battle historically snowy conditions just to make it to the airport.wftv.com
Bills' McDermott keeps things light amid heavy snow fall
Aside from the snow putting a dent in Buffalo’s practice schedule, the team is also dealing with a rash of injuries and illnesses. On Wednesday, the Bills didn’t have enough healthy bodies to hold a full practice and instead conducted a walkthrough session. For some players who grew up in warmer climates and are new to Buffalo, the storm represents their first real experience with snow. And the Bills celebrated running back LeSean McCoy’s winning 21-yard touchdown run by making snow angels on the field. Klein, whom the Bills claimed off waivers on Wednesday, has a chance of being active despite having little time to practice, McDermott said.wftv.com
Bills' game was moved to Detroit, now they have a new challenge: Getting to Detroit
It was no surprise when the NFL moved the Buffalo Bills' home game against the Cleveland Browns to Detroit. The only surprise is it took so long for the NFL to make the decision, which came late Thursday afternoon. The other surprise is that the Bills hadn't left Buffalo by Friday morning. Bills safety Damar Hamlin highlighted the issues facing the team:Who got a snow mobile in Buffalo? The Bills and Browns are scheduled to play at Ford Field at 1 p.m. Eastern on Sunday.wftv.com

Bills QB Allen returns to practice, questionable for Sunday
ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. — (AP) — Buffalo Bills quarterback Josh Allen tested his injured throwing elbow on Friday for the first time in practice this week and is listed as questionable to play against the Minnesota Vikings on Sunday. Speaking before practice, coach Sean McDermott expected the decision on Allen's playing status to come down to game time. Allen hasn’t missed a start since sustaining a similar injury in 2018, which forced him to miss four games in his rookie season. If he can’t go, the AFC-leading Bills (6-2) would turn over the NFL’s top-ranked offense in yards gained to journeyman backup Case Keenum. He’s a 10-year veteran who enjoyed his best season playing for the Vikings in 2017, when he went 11-3.wftv.com
Bills say decision on QB Allen is 'hour-to-hour' situation
ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. — (AP) — The decision on whether quarterback Josh Allen will play is an “hour-to-hour situation.,” Buffalo Bills coach Sean McDermott said Friday, and he expects it'll come down to game time on Sunday. Allen has yet to practice after he sprained his right throwing elbow in the final minutes of a loss to the New York Jets last weekend. “We are literally in an hour-to-hour situation here,” McDermott said. Allen hasn’t missed a start since sustaining a similar injury in 2018, which forced him to miss four games in his rookie season. Bills QB Josh Allen to miss practice; listed day to day
ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. — (AP) — Buffalo Bills coach Sean McDermott said Josh Allen will miss practice on Wednesday due to an injury to his throwing elbow, but the star quarterback could play against the NFC North-leading Minnesota Vikings this weekend. McDermott wouldn’t reveal the severity of the injury and stuck mostly to an opening statement in which he referred to Allen as being day to day. If Allen can’t play, the Bills would turn the NFL’s top-ranked offense in yards gained to backup Case Keenum. Allen was hurt while failing in his attempt to march the Bills into field-goal position on their final drive of a 20-17 loss at the New York Jets. Allen was spotted holding his elbow before the next play, in which he bounced a pass short intended for Stefon Diggs.wftv.com
Bills QB Josh Allen being evaluated for elbow injury, status for Week 10 vs. Vikings unclear
A day after Josh Allen injured his throwing elbow against the New York Jets, his status for Week 10 remains unclear. Buffalo Bills head coach Sean McDermott confirmed to reporters on Monday that Allen was still being evaluated and that the team hopes to know more by Tuesday. ESPN's Chris Mortensen reports that Allen is specifically being evaluated for a potential injury to his UCL and related nerves. Allen appeared to sustain the injury on Buffalo's final drive in Sunday's 20-17 loss to the New York Jets. Allen has been sidelined with a UCL injury before.wftv.com
Bills QB Allen's status uncertain with throwing elbow injury
ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. — (AP) — Josh Allen is nursing a sore right throwing elbow, leaving cause for concern over the Buffalo Bills starter’s status against the NFC North-leading Minnesota Vikings this weekend. He said it was premature to say whether Allen could practice this week or play. Acquired in a trade with Cleveland in March, Keenum has appeared in two games this season in mop-up duty. Huff burst in from Allen’s right and got both hands down on the quarterback’s arm to bend his elbow awkwardly. The fumble was recovered by Bills lineman Ryan Bates for a 19-yard loss, and left Allen flexing his right hand afterward.wftv.com
Lung issues force Bills' Poyer to take long road to KC
And Poyer was still on the road Monday in making the return trip long after the rest of the team arrived in Buffalo to kick off its bye week. Poyer, however, was cleared to play after the injury forced him to miss a 38-3 win over Pittsburgh last week. I’ll just leave it at that,” McDermott said, noting Poyer left for Kansas City after practice on Friday. Poyer isn't the first NFL player to have to rely on ground travel to make it to a game. “Obviously, when you play an opponent like this, you want to come out with a victory,” Poyer said of the win.wftv.com
Agent: Bills S Micah Hyde to go on season-ending IR
ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. — (AP) — The agent for Buffalo Bills safety Micah Hyde announced Saturday that the team plans to place the starter on season-ending injured reserve because of a neck injury. Jack Bechta added in a message posted on his Twitter account that he expects Hyde to be healthy in returning for next season. He was carted off the sideline in the second half of Buffalo’s 41-7 win over Tennessee on Monday night. Coach Sean McDermott said Tuesday that the Bills sent Hyde to the hospital to have his injury further evaluated. Bills CB Dane Jackson avoids major injury, out of hospital
ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. — (AP) — Buffalo Bills cornerback Dane Jackson was released from the hospital on Tuesday after tests revealed he sustained no major injury to his neck or spinal cord when he was struck by a teammate in 41-7 victory over the Tennessee Titans a night earlier. The Bills did not provide any other details of the extent of Jackson’s injury except to say he was undergoing further evaluation. Jackson was hurt late in the second quarter when he tackled Titans receiver Treylon Burks from behind following a 12-yard catch. As Jackson lay on Burks' back, linebacker Tremaine Edmunds dived in late and struck his teammate directly in the helmet. Safety Micah Hyde (neck), linebacker Matt Milano (stinger) and defensive tackle Jordan Phillips (hamstring) did not finish the game.wftv.com
Von Miller settles in with Bills after leaving LA Rams
I know it doesn’t have the optics, but you will learn to love this place,‘” Miller said, referring to Bills coach Sean McDermott. Miller showed he hadn't lost a step after being traded by Denver to the Rams in November. After getting five sacks in eight regular-season games with L.A., Miller added four more in the playoffs, including two in the Rams' Super Bowl victory over Cincinnati. For all he's accomplished entering his 12th season, Miller is focused on the future, while acknowledging how “weird” it might be watching the Rams celebrate their — and his — Super Bowl title this week. “Even though it is a special moment, I don’t want that to be my determining moment in my career,” Miller said.wftv.com

Haven’t slept a lot to be honest with you.”McDermott made the call to hold out Araiza from playing against Carolina. I look forward to quickly setting the record straight.”Without another punter on the roster, third-string quarterback Matt Barkley handled the punting duties. Henry not only leads the NFL in rushing with 640 yards this season, he also has 142 carries for the Titans (3-2). Henry is averaging 128 yards a game with 58 yards in the opener the only time he's finished with fewer than 113. Spagnuolo defense perfect complement to elite Chiefs offense
FILE - Kansas City Chiefs defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo addresses the media during a news conference at Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City, Mo., in this Thursday, Jan. 16, 2020, file photo. “That game," Brady said Monday, “is one of my least favorite football memories.”He hopes he can reflect on Sunday with a bit more joy. Brady will once again lead his offense against Spagnuolo's defense, only this time it will be his Tampa Bay Buccaneers facing the defending champion Chiefs in the Super Bowl. It also will be a rematch of a game earlier this season, when once more Spagnuolo kept Brady off balance as Kansas City coasted to a 27-24 victory in Tampa Bay. All traits that Mathieu shares with the entire Chiefs defense.
Chiefs' Mathieu making most of opportunity in Kansas City
Kansas City Chiefs safety Tyrann Mathieu (32) returns an interception during the second half of an NFL divisional round football game against the Cleveland Browns, Sunday, Jan. 17, 2021, in Kansas City. After helping the Chiefs win their first Super Bowl in five decades last season, Mathieu has followed up with what can only be described as the best season of his career. On a quarter of snaps this season, he's lined up in the deep safety spot. You know that if you feed something to Tyrann, he’s going to get it and he’s going to know why,” Spagnuolo said. “I think any position on the field allows you the chance to make plays,” Mathieu said.
D-coordinators bring head coaching chops to NFL title games
But all are credited with providing a steady helping hand, a sturdy shoulder and a willing ear to their team’s current head coach. PETTINEPettine went 10-22 (.313) as head coach of the Cleveland Browns from 2014-15, before joining Matt LaFleur, who was named Packers head coach in 2018 after just two seasons as an offensive coordinator, a year each with the Rams and Titans. Arians brought along Bowles, whom he coached at Temple in the mid-1980s and who had been his defensive coordinator in Arizona from 2013-14. It began with Frazier saying he didn’t want McDermott to make the same mistakes he did as a first-time head coach. It’s a business with a lot of egos, a lot of people concerned with who gets the credit.”SPAGNUOLOSpagnuolo, 61, compiled an 11-41 record (.212) as head coach of the St. Louis Rams from 2009-11 and as interim head coach of the New York Giants in 2017, when he went 1-3.
Big offenses, overlooked defenses in AFC title game
The Kansas City Chiefs won their first NFL title since 1970 when they beat San Francisco in last year's Super Bowl. What we get Sunday is a matchup of dynamic offenses and overlooked defenses, the top two teams in the conference. Kansas City (15-2) has the confidence of a reigning champion and a charisma few NFL teams can match. That could provide an edge over Bills rookie Tyler Bass — except that Bass has been very reliable all season. Buffalo punter Corey Bojorquez and Kansas City rookie Johnny Townsend were two of the most dependable in the AFC.
Chiefs' Reid, Bills' McDermott to match wits for AFC title
Funny thing: Even after firing him, Reid suspected deep down that McDermott was destined for big things. McDermott has the long-suffering Buffalo Bills playing in their first AFC championship game since beating Kansas City on Jan. 23, 1994, when they advanced to their fourth straight Super Bowl. They love football in Buffalo and he's really done a nice job with that whole program.”Not surprisingly, the job McDermott has done with the Bills neatly parallels the job Reid has done in Kansas City. Both have surrounded them with playmakers, such as the Bills' Stefon Diggs and the Chiefs' Tyreek Hill and Travis Kelce. McDermott never harbored any animosity toward Reid when he was fired from the Eagles on Jan. 15, 2011.
EXPLAINER: A look at the data behind NFL decision making
“You can make a very good decision and have a bad result and you can make a bad decision and have a good result,” said Frank Frigo, the co-founder of EdjSports, a data company that has created its own customizable model for decision making in the NFL. HOW FIGURE OUTThere are several models for decision making and they typically agree on most calls, although there are slight differences. Calls that increase win probability are good and those that decrease it are bad. That decision cost Cleveland 5 percentage points in EdjSports’ win probability. That decision cost the Titans 13.7 percentage points in win probability.

Much like Jackson, Allen prefers putting the past behind him and focusing on the next challenge. “We’ve had our backs against the wall since the Pittsburgh game,” Harbaugh said. The Bills limited the Ravens to only 118 yards rushing in last year’s meeting, a 24-17 Ravens win.

Mahomes leads champion Chiefs to 14-2 mark in stacked AFC
While the Chiefs get another week’s rest, the six other AFC playoff teams get going this weekend. For just the second time since the 1970 league merger, every team in the AFC playoffs has at least 11 wins. Last Lombardi: Super Bowl 54, 31-20 over the San Francisco 49ers on Feb. 2, 2020, at Miami. Last Lombardi: Super Bowl 43, 27-23 win over the Arizona Cardinals on Feb. 1, 2009, at Tampa, Florida. Their pass rush is nearly nonexistent with 19 sacks, the fewest by a playoff team since Denver had 19 in 1979.

The Bills will be the first team to play the Titans since the NFL closed Tennessee's facility Sept. 29.
NFL requiring coaches, staff near bench to wear masks
The NFL has updated its gameday protocols by requiring every coach and staff member in the bench area to wear a mask and reducing the size of each teams travel party. Owners also will have to follow COVID-19 testing requirements to gain access to the locker room, field or team charter. We have been really fortunate that cases of COVID-19 are very low across the league, Goodell said Tuesday. It is a testament to the plans, but most importantly to the diligence of the players, the teams and their staffs. I believe that we may be having a lot of teams that will start with no fans in the beginning this season, and then evolve to fans, Goodell said.
