Flurry of NHL trades continue with Avs, Canes making moves

The reigning champion Avalanche, who want to get back atop hockey's mountain, acquired center Lars Eller from the Washington Capitals for a 2025 second-round pick. This is a good pickup.”After buying low on underachieving winger Jesse Puljujarvi, the Hurricanes made another under-the-radar pickup Wednesday by getting defenseman Shayne Gostisbehere from Arizona for a 2026 third-round pick. They could finally trade 24-year-old Jakob Chychrun, who has been on the block since before last season. "You do everything you can in the year where you feel like you have a chance to win the Cup. ___Follow AP Hockey Writer Stephen Whyno on Twitter at https://twitter.com/SWhyno___AP NHL: https://apnews.com/hub/nhl and https://twitter.com/AP_SportsCopyright 2023 The Associated Press.

Fantasy Hockey: With Patrick Kane dealt, here are the players we want moved by the NHL trade deadline

Here's a list of players whose fantasy values could get a boost if they're moved by the NHL trade deadline. Greenway can play up and down the lineup, but the big fantasy boost will come from an improved shooting percentage. Miller, C/LW/RW, CanucksAfter Chychrun, Miller has the most fantasy value on this list. Though his output has dipped this season, he's still in the top 50 in scoring and averaging close to a point per game. Also note that since acquiring Beauvillier and Kuzmenko, Miller hasn't shared the ice very often with star center Elias Pettersson at even strength, capping his fantasy value with the Canucks.

Parker Kelly then scored twice as Senators got five goals in little over six minutes to go ahead 5-4 early in the third period. NHL roster freeze lifts, flat cap prompts money-saving moves

Philadelphia sent a high draft pick to Arizona to take on a pricey defenseman. The New York Rangers gave a back-to-back Stanley Cup champion a contract Tampa Bay never could have afforded. The moves made Thursday when the NHL's roster freeze for the Seattle expansion draft lifted were all consequences of the salary cap remaining flat at $81.5 million because of pandemic revenue losses. Detroit signed Nedeljkovic to a $6 million, two-year contract — just under what the 25-year-old might have been awarded in an arbitration hearing. ___Follow AP Hockey Writer Stephen Whyno on Twitter at https://twitter.com/SWhyno___More AP NHL: https://apnews.com/hub/NHL and https://twitter.com/AP_SportsCopyright 2021 The Associated Press.

Sabres end 18-game skid with 6-1 win over Flyers

Buffalo Sabres celebrate a goal by center Curtis Lazar (27) during the first period of an NHL hockey game against the Philadelphia Flyers in Buffalo, N.Y., Wednesday, March 31, 2021. (AP Photo/Adrian Kraus)BUFFALO, N.Y. – Embarrassment for Brandon Montour and the Buffalo Sabres turned into relief on Wednesday night. The Sabres ended their 18-game skid — the NHL’s longest in 17 years — with a resounding 6-1 win over the Philadelphia Flyers. AdThe Sabres also snapped a 0-9-2 home skid, one short of matching a franchise record set during the 1990-91 season. After Philadelphia’s Ivan Provorov scored 3:50 into the second period, Buffalo responded by closing the period with goals from Fogarty and Casey Mittelstadt.

Kapanen scores twice; Pens welcome back fans with 5-2 win

Following a scoreless first period, Farabee and Kapanen scored 1:07 apart to open the second period. The Flyers will welcome fans back to the Wells Fargo Center on Sunday against Washington. Elliott stops 23 shots in Flyers' 3-0 win over Sabres

The Flyers were spurred by a replenished lineup in which four players returned after spending two weeks in the NHL’s COVID-19 protocol. They included Scott Laughton, who scored a breakaway goal to make it 3-0 late in the second period. Elliott improved to 5-1 this season and upped his career record to 15-2-2 with four shutouts against the Sabres, including a 40-save outing in a 3-0 win on Jan. 19. Elliott chalked up his dominance to opening his career with Ottawa, Buffalo’s traditional Atlantic Division rival. The Sabres dropped to 2-6-1 in their past nine and played their second game without captain Jack Eichel, listed as day to day with a lower body injury.

Farabee has 4-point game, Flyers beat Penguins 6-3

Philadelphia Flyers' James van Riemsdyk celebrates his goal with teammates during the first period of an NHL hockey game against the Pittsburgh Penguins, Wednesday, Jan. 13, 2021, in Philadelphia. With Gritty thrusting his bulbous belly from his sofa, the Flyers turned Patrick and Lindblom's homecoming into a meaningful victory. Jankowski, who scored just five goals last season, scored the first one of this season 5:12 into the game. Farabee had assists on van Riemsdyk, Patrick and Hayes’ goals. UP NEXTThe Penguins and Flyers play again Friday in Philly as part of a packed, 56-game schedule necessitated by the pandemic.
