Sean Manaea was brilliant in his Padres debut Friday night, but was pulled by manager Bob Melvin after throwing 88 pitches over seven innings. This is the second straight day a Padres starter took a no-hitter deep into a game against the Diamondbacks. It's also the second straight day the D-backs broke up the no-hit bid against reliever Tim Hill.

The Diamondbacks rallied to win Thursday’s game 4-2 when Seth Beer hit a game-winning, three-run homer in the ninth.

Yu Darvish threw the first six innings for San Diego without giving up a hit, but he was pulled before the seventh after throwing 92 pitches. Left-hander Tim Hill relieved Darvish, matching up against the left-handed Smith to start the seventh, but the hitter responded with a clean single to left. Darvish — a five-time All-Star — made his third opening day start and second for the Padres.

After beating cancer, KC's Hill won't let COVID-19 stop him
Not long ago, Royals pitcher Tim Hill was wrapping up eight brutal months of chemotherapy to treat colon cancer. The biopsy came back positive for colon cancer, the same disease that claimed his father when Hill was just 17 years old. With the support of the Royals, Hill began to build back his strength. Those factors left Hill wondering whether he should step on the field when baseball resumed or stick to the sideline, knowing they increased the risk of complications should he contract COVID-19. Some of it seems over-the-top when you first look at it, but when you start seeing people test positive, you see maybe it's necessary.
