That move, along with lifting a ban on athletes being compensate for their names, images and likenesses, has created unprecedented transfer movement in major college football. The number of FBS football players entering their names in the transfer portal in 2021 was 1,427, up from 896 in 2020, according to the NCAA. The latest move to scale back contact in practice comes in response to a five-year study involving six major college football teams that found more head impact exposure and concussions happened in preseason practice than during games. Todd Berry, executive director of the American Football Coaches' Association, said there was some concern among coaches that Army and Air Force awould skew the study data.

He said conversations about a spring football season have been minimal, but there has been a theme. If the NFL does nothing to accommodate spring college football some of the sure-things are almost certain to leave. NCAA finalizing plan for extended college football preseason
After the pandemic wiped out spring practice for most major college football teams, an NCAA plan to extend the preseason by two weeks could help coaches and players make up for the lost time. Schools have started this week bringing their football players back to campus for voluntary workouts mostly weight training and conditioning in team facilities. Lyons said teams will be required to complete at least the four weeks of standard preseason before playing a game. Todd Berry, executive director for the American Football Coaches Association, said he would expect some coaches to segment their teams, holding multiple practices per day. If facing coverings are needed for players, Stewart said neck gaiters stretchy scarves made of lightweight, breathable material could be the way teams go.
