Vignettes: Service academy athletes recall Sept. 11

Sept 11 The Academies FILE - In this Sept. 4, 2000, file photo, Army head coach Todd Berry works on the sidelines during the first half of an NCAA college football game against Cincinnati in Cincinnati. We were going to go out and do exactly what the military academy was designed for. Jenkins received three Bronze Stars for his service and now is back home in Dublin, Ohio, after a four-year stint with the FBI. When Army coach Todd Berry addressed the team at a noon meeting on Sept. 11, 2001, he was caught off-guard by the queries from the players. At the academy, you don’t have a lot of peripheral opponents because it’s just the nature of the academy.

The latest move to scale back contact in practice comes in response to a five-year study involving six major college football teams that found more head impact exposure and concussions happened in preseason practice than during games. Todd Berry, executive director of the American Football Coaches' Association, said there was some concern among coaches that Army and Air Force awould skew the study data.

Spring college football: When? How much? Who plays?

Wisconsin coach Paul Chryst said before a spring football season is planned, there has to be a discussion about fall 2021. He said conversations about a spring football season have been minimal, but there has been a theme. If the NFL does nothing to accommodate spring college football some of the sure-things are almost certain to leave. There is so much to sort out, including the NCAA signing off on a spring football season. At this point in time, we'll see.__Follow Ralph D. NCAA finalizing plan for extended college football preseason

After the pandemic wiped out spring practice for most major college football teams, an NCAA plan to extend the preseason by two weeks could help coaches and players make up for the lost time. Schools have started this week bringing their football players back to campus for voluntary workouts mostly weight training and conditioning in team facilities. Lyons said teams will be required to complete at least the four weeks of standard preseason before playing a game. Todd Berry, executive director for the American Football Coaches Association, said he would expect some coaches to segment their teams, holding multiple practices per day. If facing coverings are needed for players, Stewart said neck gaiters stretchy scarves made of lightweight, breathable material could be the way teams go.
