Volusia County residents keep ongoing fight for rights in mind on Martin Luther King Jr. Day
Throughout Volusia County, residents participated in marches on Martin Luther King Jr. Day to remember and honor the civil rights leader. There also were marches in New Smyrna Beach and Daytona Beach, where more than 600 people attended the Martin Luther King Jr. "Martin Luther King [Jr.] believed in love, but we still have a long way to go." Thompson said it was important to spread the message at the Martin Luther King Day parade, because it's what he would have done. I think that's a legacy that was started and left by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. We're so honored to be honoring him today."

On Sunday afternoon, the City of DeLand will rename Eastside Park and Playground for Tra Thomas, a DeLand High School graduate and former Philadelphia Eagles offensive lineman. Before the DeLand community gathers Monday to honor the life of Martin Luther King Jr., the celebration will start the day before when the city renames Eastside Park and Playground for DeLand High School graduate Tra Thomas, a three-time NFL Pro Bowler and keynote speaker at Mondays annual event. The renaming of the park, located off South Frankfort Avenue between East Howry and Voorhis avenues, is one of multiple events scheduled to commemorate Kings life. Thomas, a DeLand High School graduate, stayed involved with the local community both during his football career and after his retirement in 2012, Chris Graham, a spokesman for DeLand, said in a news release.
