EUGENE, Ore. — (AP) — Olympic silver medalist Fred Kerley flashed a peace sign at the crowd after winning the 100 meters at the U.S. outdoor track and field championships Friday night. All three earned spots on the U.S. team for the world outdoor championships in Eugene next month. Melissa Jefferson of Coastal Carolina, who finished eighth in the 100 at this year's NCAA outdoor championships, edged Aleia Hobbs for the national title in the women's event. He was widely expected to do well in Tokyo but failed to advance to the Olympic final. Twanisha Terry finished third to round out the world team.

Last year the Olympic gold medalist in the 1,500 ran the Bowerman mile in 3:47.24, the fastest time on American soil. Two-time Olympic gold medalist and Oregon native Ryan Crouse r won the shot put with a mark of 75-6 1/4. The Prefontaine Classic, named after the late Steve Prefontaine, is the third and only U.S. stop on the Diamond League. Hayward Field, on the University of Oregon campus, also will host the U.S. championships in late June before the world championships in July.

Even in a race with no clear favorites, Jacobs was a surprise. Jacobs’ victory came on quite a night for Italy. Only a few minutes before his stunner, countryman Gianmarco Tamberi tied Qatari high jumper Mutaz Essa Barshim for gold in the high jump.

McKeon became the first female swimmer and second woman in any sport to claim seven medals at one Olympics. TEE IT UPXander Schauffele won the Olympic gold medal in golf in a tense finish.
