Same old result, different outlook for USMNT after World Cup exit: 'We can be giants eventually'
It knocked him down to a knee here at the Khalifa International Stadium, shortly after a final whistle had foiled his World Cup dreams. “But, I mean, being the second youngest team in the World Cup and getting the same result, it speaks for itself.”Their four starting lineups, in fact, have been the four youngest of any at this World Cup. It sputtered early, and ruffled feathers, and outright enraged some youth soccer directors around the country. It helped produce 17 of the 26 players on this year’s World Cup roster, including Adams, Christian Pulisic, Weston McKennie, Gio Reyna and Brenden Aaronson. “I think we accomplished a piece of that in this World Cup,” McKennie said.wftv.com
US knocked out of World Cup, loses to the Netherlands 3-1
But just like in 2010 against Ghana and 2014 against Belgium, the United States was eliminated in the round of 16. The Americans are winless in 12 games against European opponents at the World Cup since 2002, losing six, and are 1-7 during the tournament’s knockout rounds. While the United States had the better play at the start, the Dutch went ahead after breaking the American press. In 37 World Cup matches, the Americans have never won a game in which they trailed. ___AP World Cup coverage: https://apnews.com/hub/world-cup and https://twitter.com/AP_SportsCopyright 2022 The Associated Press.wftv.com
World Cup 2022: U.S. bounced from tourney in 3-1 loss to Netherlands
DOHA, Qatar — The devastating blow that knocked the U.S. out of the 2022 World Cup was a 21-pass Dutch masterpiece. The Netherlands lulled them into a trance, then pounced with talent unlike any the U.S. had seen at this World Cup. To the USMNT, though, it was simply the completion of one tournament within the World Cup, and the start of a second one. On paper, it leaves the USMNT precisely where it was in 2010 and 2014, with a single World Cup win and a Round of 16 exit. Those stars, meanwhile, will be in their prime when the men’s World Cup comes to home soil less than four years from now.wftv.com
'He's the general': How Tyler Adams, through nature and nurture, became USMNT's undeniable World Cup leader
Sarachan was the grandfatherly interim coach of the USMNT at the time, and no, he couldn't tell precisely what Tyler Adams would become. Adams, Sarachan says, "had a certain presence about him." Which is, perhaps, why that maturity was already evident when he joined the New York Red Bulls academy. By age 12, his talent was obvious — the Red Bulls selected him as a model for their online training video library — but so was his character. So we created good relationships.”He also observed the elder statesmen of the Red Bulls.wftv.com
The surprising strength that makes the USMNT a legit World Cup semifinal threat
Some had run more than 21 miles over three World Cup games. But it also showed once again why this USMNT is a legitimate semifinal threat at the 2022 World Cup: Because, over 300 minutes of soccer here, they’ve been nearly impenetrable. They've kept multiple clean sheets at a World Cup for the first time since the inaugural tournament in 1930. “We've defended so well throughout the entire World Cup so far,” midfielder Brenden Aaronson said. The “grandpa of the group,” as Adams dubbed Ream, “didn't expect to be here, involved in a World Cup,” he admitted.wftv.com
Gregg Berhalter apologizes for U.S. Soccer's Iran posts at tense, often absurd, news conference
Iran ranks 178th out of 180 countries in the Reporters Without Borders World Press Freedom Index. Some Iranian reporters applauded Iran coach Carlos Queiroz and forward Karim Ansarifard before and after their news conference on Monday afternoon. They asked Berhalter about Jurgen Klinsmann’s “psychological warfare” and comments that have been labeled racist. He then asked whether U.S. Soccer's statement would be a disadvantage in Tuesday's game, or whether it would "boost morale." “I can only reiterate that the players and the staff knew nothing about what was being posted,” Berhalter said.wftv.com
Why USMNT should gain confidence from disappointing draw with England
“USA WINS 1-1,” the tabloid bellowed in 2010, and inside that U.S. locker room, although players certainly didn’t proclaim victory, confidence soared. “Because we didn't win,” he said, plainly and bluntly. The USMNT didn’t just belong on the same field as England, which they’d already proved in 2010. They didn’t feel like an underdog, like the 2010 team so clearly was. I think it was a really tough opponent.”“Tonight didn't surprise me one bit,” he later continued, hailing the USMNT.wftv.com
World Cup Viewer's Guide: US seeks repeat of 1950 upset
None of those victories were World Cup matches and the second meeting between the teams on soccer's biggest stage ended in a 1-1 draw in 2010. United States midfielder Christian Pulisic doesn't want to hear about stats, rankings or predictions. “We don’t look at the odds and we’re not at the World Cup just to make up the numbers,” Pulisic said. Without Mane at the World Cup, Senegal lost to the Netherlands 2-0 and coach Aliou Cissé is demanding more from forwards Ismaila Sarr and Krépin Diatta. ___AP World Cup coverage: https://apnews.com/hub/world-cup and https://twitter.com/AP_SportsCopyright 2022 The Associated Press.wftv.com
USMNT-England is more than a game. It's a chance to 'change the way the world views American soccer'
It was almost four years ago now, not long after an American soccer nadir. They will step onto sport's biggest stage, at the World Cup, in European prime time, to meet England, the self-proclaimed inventors of soccer. We want to change the way that the world sees American soccer. They emerged soon after the USMNT qualified for the 2022 World Cup, minutes and hours after they were drawn into a group alongside England. They wrote that "England's hopes of World Cup glory soared."wftv.com
World Cup 2022: Tyler Adams named USMNT captain in historic first
[World Cup: Viewer's guide | Group previews | Top 30 players | Power rankings]DOHA, Qatar — The U.S. men’s national team went four-and-a-half years without a consistent captain, but on the eve of the 2022 World Cup, it named a historic one. When he does, he’ll be the youngest captain at this World Cup, and the first Black man to captain the U.S. throughout any World Cup. With the World Cup approaching, though, Berhalter went to the leadership council and asked them about the future of the captaincy. He is, at 23, the youngest U.S. captain at a World Cup since 1950, but already carries himself like a veteran. He will not quite be the first Black player to wear the armband for the U.S. in a World Cup game; Earnie Stewart did in 2002.wftv.com
World Cup 2022: USMNT still has lineup questions ahead of opener vs. Wales
Why Berhalter should start McKennie, Musah and AdamsThroughout World Cup qualifying and beyond, Berhalter seemed to have settled on a preferred starting 11, or at least a front six. Pulisic would start on the left wing, and Weah on the right, with Jesús Ferreira at striker in between them. So might it make sense to play Reyna centrally, as one of the three midfielders? So Berhalter could, and should, start his “MMA” midfield — McKennie, Musah, Adams — then bring Reyna off the bench at halftime, or at least within 60 minutes. It would allow the USMNT to play Reyna or Aaronson on the wing and get seven of its eight best players on the field together for the first time ever.wftv.com

USMNT injury concerns mount as World Cup nears
But Luca de la Torre and Chris Richards are sidelined, and the World Cup, for both, appears to be in doubt. Luca de la Torre sidelined for three weeksThe freshest worry, meanwhile, surrounds de la Torre and depth. And at the very least, it cost Turner 90 valuable minutes with the World Cup a few weeks away. And he's got the opportunity to maybe get called up for the World Cup as well. US missing many starters ahead of World Cup warmup vs Japan
Gregg Berhalter's U.S. roster as the World Cup approaches is as notable for its absences as for those set to play in Friday's warmup against Japan at Düsseldorf, Germany. Miles Robinson will miss the World Cup because of a torn Achilles. I can imagine at the World Cup some teams will be doing that for players that aren't playing 90 minutes and aren't completely fit." They have started together just four times: a 2019 exhibition against Ecuador, World Cup qualifiers against Honduras and Canada in January, and a June friendly against Uruguay. We don’t play to be available for future games.”Berhalter plans to announce his 26-man World Cup roster on Nov. 9, 12 days before the Americans open against Wales.wftv.com
A USMNT Premier League migration shifts the focus on American players in Europe
A few months later, he is gearing up for his first Premier League season, and he isn't alone. So it's there, in the EPL (and on NBC networks), where American eyes will be trained between now and mid-November, when the 2022 World Cup begins. So, with the Prem and Bundesliga set to begin on Friday, here's a rundown of USMNT World Cup roster contenders and their overseas club situations. Tyler Adams (defensive midfielder, Leeds) — The 23-year-old's $24 million move to Leeds made him the third-most expensive American player ever. Luca de la Torre replaced Yunus Musah in midfield, and Paul Arriola and Jordan Morris were on the wings instead of Pulisic and Tim Weah. Close to reaching World Cup, US looks to avoid last-day flop
“The guys have told us, that have been here and through this path before, that we thought we qualified last World Cup," midfielder Tyler Adams said Wednesday. Because the Americans have a plus-13 goal difference and Costa Rica is at plus-three, the U.S. could be denied only by a defeat of at least six goals. “The media has classified us as the golden generation and the generation that’s going to qualify for the next World Cup,” 22-year-old winger Tim Weah said. "We’re coming here to be aggressive in the game and to win the soccer game. and Berhalter planned to contact those not in Costa Rica to congratulate them.wftv.com

These young Americans stumbled on the road again in qualifying, wasting an early lead in a choppy 1-1 draw against Jamaica on Tuesday night. The Americans have gained five of 12 possible points on the road, drawing at El Salvador and Jamaica, winning at Honduras and losing at Panama. Nine additional points may be enough to get back to the World Cup for the first time since 2014 and 10 points likely would assure a berth.wftv.com

US could open WCup qualifying in Trinidad, site of '17 loss
NEW YORK The United States will open qualifying for the 2022 World Cup on the road next June, possibly back in Trinidad and Tobago where it was eliminated from reaching the 2018 tournament. The Americans will close their 14-match round in March 2022 at Costa Rica, where they have lost seven straight qualifiers. The Americans are among five nations with direct berths in the final round of qualifying known as the octagonal joined by Mexico, Costa Rica, Honduras and Jamaica. CONCACAF had used the hexagonal for the final round of qualifying for the World Cups of 1998 through 2018. Canada headed six teams seeded into first-round groups that play a single round robin, with two games each in October and November.
Sadness to surreal: The biggest day in Tyler Adams' career
(Miguel A. Lopes/Pool Photo via AP)LISBON A day that ended with Tyler Adams producing the biggest moment in Leipzigs history and his own young career started in disappointment. Without a goal in his injury-disrupted 20 months at Leipzig, Adams confidence wasnt diminished that he could break the 1-1 deadlock in the quarterfinal. An American had never done so this late in the Champions League knockout stage. The Bundesliga was reached in 2016 and Champions League qualification secured within three years. It's a crazy, crazy journey for RB Leipzig," Nagelsmann said.
