Biden administration suspends some sanctions on Yemen rebels
Read full article: Biden administration suspends some sanctions on Yemen rebels(AP Photo/Hani Mohammed)WASHINGTON – The Biden administration on Monday suspended some of the terrorism sanctions that former Secretary of State Mike Pompeo imposed on Yemen’s Houthi rebels in his waning days in office. The Treasury Department said it would exempt certain transactions involving the Houthis from sanctions resulting from Pompeo's designation of the group as a “foreign terrorist organization” on Jan. 10. The sanctions Pompeo imposed had taken effect Jan. 19, just a day before President Joe Biden was inaugurated, and had been roundly criticized by the United Nations and relief organizations. Six years of war between a U.S.-backed Arab coalition and the Houthi rebels have been catastrophic for Yemen, killing more than 112,000 people and reducing infrastructure from roads and hospitals to water and electricity networks to ruins. Saudi Arabia has advocated the terror designation, hoping it would pressure the rebels to reach a peace deal.

Aid agencies said Monday they were struggling to figure out the implications of the designation, which would bring sanctions against the Houthis. Those include special U.S Treasury licenses to allow U.S. aid to continue flowing and aid agencies to continue working. Still, aid groups said the impact could be disastrous. That will cripple aid agencies and NGOs, which must use the banks to move funds, pay salaries and keep operations running.

UN: Yemen programs fighting virus might stop by end of June
Read full article: UN: Yemen programs fighting virus might stop by end of JuneCAIRO The United Nations warned Wednesday that its programs to fight the coronavirus in war-torn Yemen might have to stop by the end the month unless they get an immediate injection of cash. This will severely handicap efforts to contain the outbreak, which is already spreading rapidly, said Hayat Abu Saleh, a spokesperson for the U.N. At least 31 major U.N. programs in Yemen, covering essentially every sector, from food to health care and nutrition, were at a serious risk of significant reduction or closure, she said. Abu Saleh predicted the U.N. would likely start winding down some of its disease outbreak and control programs next month, including efforts to contain cholera, malaria and dengue fever, among other diseases. The World Health Organization believes that there is significant underestimation of the outbreak, which could further hinder efforts to get supplies into Yemen needed to contain the virus.
